My latest Compaq V2000Z (Turion ML-32) just arrived, and it sports the new Vista Compatible sticker. At the time of purchase, the only requirement for Vista is 512MB or RAM.
Needless to say, the Turion will be compatible with the 64-bit variety of Vista.

Ooohhh, new sticker
Sounds good, but don't expect all eye candy to be on -
Nice...I want some of those stickers!
-
thats different than the designed for windows vista sticker right?
-
umn y didnt i get one? mine aint compatible?
-
I want one of those, stupid Sony gave me the normal Designed for Microsoft Windows XP sticker
@ rhcpcrony - lol sony is lame ... the same for both of us. -
me too does that mean we wont be able to upgrade?
-
That is cool. But remember the there is a difference between Compatible vs Capable as per an article on dailyTech few days ago.
But it is good to get assurance that V2000z is Capable( Though we were certain).
Now, even more happy because I choosed V2000z instead of DV1000 or V2000. -
"compatible" vs. "capable"
My bad... I should have said capable in the subject.
As for eye candy, aka Windows Aero; it appears that the Radeon Xpress 200M may just do it. It meets at least 3 out of the 4 requirements:
1. DirectX 9 class graphics hardware that supports WDDM and Pixel Shader 2.0
2. A minimum of 32 bits per pixel
3. Appropriate graphics memory for specified monitor resolutions expressed as total pixels.
4. Graphics memory bandwidth, as assessed by Windows Vista’s built in system assessment tool WinSAT.EXE, of at least 1,800MB/s
When I get some time on my hands, I will load the latest beta and run winsat.exe to check the bandwidth requirement (item 4 above). My main requirement is not the graphics subsystem of Vista, but more on its 64-bit capabilities. For me, Vista is not worth trying unless it's the x64 flavor. -
But aero can be turned off. Thus making computers 2-3 old run vista. I just think it is a marketing ploy by Microsoft...
-
That is why there are few difference in Capable vs Compatible vs Complaint. So, even Intel GMA900 would be support Vista, then it would potentially called Compatible, not Capable( or something similar).
One is just support Vista OS, but not aero Interface, and another with some other stuff like 1GB min ram.
Anyways, all these are guide lines, nothing enforcing you use AeroGlass or something like that. This really helps non-techies to understand and buy what they want. -

I posted about the Windows Vista sticker a little while ago - basically, it all boils down to this (and I quote myself):
Chaz -
My compaq v2000z has a Windows Vista Capable sticker on it... I just got the notebook this morning.
-
So has anyone tried this laptop with Aero enabled?
-
Vista isn't out yet. That sticker just means the laptop can run Vista Home Basic edition or summink with aero disabled when it comes out. -
Finally got some time to install Vista Beta 2. Build 5308 (february). x64 version.
The installation went smoothly but not all devices were detected (sound and modem). The system indicates it's the "Vista Ultimate Edition version 6.0". Surprisingly, Vista installed and booted into "aero glass" while the integrated video memory (shared) was set to only 32MB. Since the system is only 512MB, supposedly the bare minimum for Vista, only 480MB was available due to the integrated graphics. I am writing this inside IE7 (64-bit).
For first visual impression, Vista is like a swimsuit model in lingerie moving in slow motion, while XP is like your weatherman in a business suit. Compared to XP on the same notebook, Vista was very pleasing to navigate but response was sluggish. To get any work done, I believe 1GB of RAM is required.
I am pleased that the Radeon Xpress 200M is "glass ready". This quick test showed a V2000z (and its older sister M2000z, also cousin HP ze2000z), with a Turion (in this case a ML-32) will have no problem with Vista. If anything, just add more memory; "future proof" (64-bit wise) as some would say.Attached Files:

Am I the only one who doesn't see the hype in this Aero Glass ****!? Vista and Aero comes out 5 long years after XP and all they can come up with is a bit of transparency effects and 3D windows when switching applications!?!?!?
I dunno about you guys, but even though the GMA 900 is not able to run Aero, I very much feel it is perfectly able to, Aero doesn't look graphically intensive or impressive to me at all, and this is coming from a life long Windows guy, not a OSX user that always bashes on "Windoze", in fact, I've never even used OSX. I feel that the GMA 900 would be able to handle Aero Glass. I mean, if my brother's desktop with a GMA 900 can run Half Life 2 at 15 fps (I know slow), it should easily be able to run the far less demanding Aero Glass right!?
I'm pretty, very dissapointed with Vista, looks a lot like XP 1.5 to me and actually even OSX looks better than this and is as old as XP!!! -

I heard that apparently most version of Vistas when they come out will have 3D desktops which is apparently this new and great and innovative desktop design (as you can stack your windows in 3 dimensions) which hogs your computer resources like mad. Furthermore, Vista (not the beta) is drawn on hardware, so it should be lighter on the CPU.
The thing I'm looking forward to most is DirectX10, but all this is still like a year away. -
Quick update.
I changed the integrated video memory to 64MB, did not see any difference; perhaps a bit slower since now there's a bit less memory for the system. I ran the Performance and Rating Tool and got an overall score of "2". Whatever that means. The detailed scores are:
*Processor: 4.4
*Memory 2.0
*Harddisk: 3.7
*Graphics: 2.3
*Gaming Graphics: 2.5
How Vista arrived at 2 for overall Microsoft only knows.
Also tried the Flip 3D variation of Alt-Tab; with Win-Tab. All windows are arranged in a 3D stack with animation arrangement as you tab a new window to the top of the stack. Pretty, but now sure how useful that would be.Attached Files:

The X200M in the V2000Z can run the Aero Glass interface can it not? If so then why can the V2000Z not run it with all the Eye-Candy turned on?
I thought the Aero Glass GUI was all there was to the Eye Candy... -
