US Navy buys dual-screen laptops from gScreen

The United States Navy SEALS are purchasing dual-screen notebooks from startup gScreen. This special ruggedized version of the company's G400 notebook has has two identical 15-inch LED-backlit displays. The standard G400 is not yet on sale to customers, but will be on the 25th of this month. The US Navy machines will have very healthy specifications, including an Intel QX9300 quad-core processor, 4GB of RAM, dual Nvidia 8600M graphics cards, Blu-ray drives, and Windows XP Pro.

uh huh. looks like the screens slide behind each other, so you can probably just use one screen too. interesting concept. interesting how they went for the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Can you display different things on them? That way by crossing your eyes you would be able to achieve the stereoscopy of the poor man.

SLI 8600? I don't understand why the choice of SLI 8600 over the 9800 GT available in the usual G400. Very odd decision there.

Not SLI, two seperate 8600GTs to run independently.

Very true there. I was wondering at first if it could be that each 8600M was to power each monitor, but thought of SLI and was further flummoxed by the fact that the 9800M GT outperforms the 8600M GT SLI, leading me to question again the decision to get dual 8600M GTs. I totally forgot that there was no mention of SLI.

I wonder how much each of these babies cost. Considering the price military equipment usually carries, I'm thinking a pretty hefty sum.

Strange choice of GPU. Say, aren't the 8xxx series prone to overheat? Maybe they're planning to use these notebooks to self-implode after a period of time? Or perhaps a timebomb?

Looks very interesting (and far more practical/balanced than the W700DS).

I find it odd that there is no mention of screen resolution (I assume SXGA+ or UXGA, but it's unclear).

I'd also be a little concerned about the strength of the LCD assembly as it seems to fly out from the center, and there is no apparent locking design (unlike the old IBM 701C butterfly keyboard).

Maybe they need two so the machine will still run if one of the video cards craps out. I think it is more a question of reliability than power in this case.

Interesting concept indeed. I wonder when will this be available for general consumption as well. But, why 8600 GPUs? They didn't hear about the nvidia scandal? Or they got them really cheap? :)

And here is the answer regarding availability, though there's no info on price:
Customers can reserve a new G400 dual screen laptop starting February 25th, 2009. The G400 will be sold through our new online store at Amazon.

BTW, how does this laptop fold and how does it looks like when its dual lid is closed?
