Nice, thanks for the information.
Yeah - if the cores can't be independently clocked, then battery life might suffer indeed. -
That is good. It is coming before end of 2nd Q. But the shots I got from laptop logic shows it can clock each core differently( I remember that way). Well, it is good that we are finally getting Core-Duo match with 64Bit. I think this would be more future proof for a while, atleast(!?).
As per the battery life, frankly I am not expect Turion X2 to beat Core-Duo. I think Intel did excellent job on core-duo. -
I am not sure if the X2 is going to have the ability to unpower its cache. That's where the PM was better, just 1/64 of the entire cache need to be powered 100% of the time. Turion was incapable of doing that!
chinna, I have one of those screen shots you mention. THe one I have has both cores at the same clock speed. But their might have been more of these leaked shots.
Now let's hope the inquirer's news is based on something real!
Edit: Anyone know if they are still maintaining an MT/ML system ... that was a stupid idea IMO, the cost difference doesn't verify having 10W extra power envalope. -
Yes, it is still there as far as I know.
I think AMD is marking those based on yeilds. I am guessing The core which can clock lower voltages marked as MT( May be like Intel with defective cache marked as Celerons with lower cache). It is just my guess.
But as per battery life, they both consume similar power at low speed, so I would not see much difference battery lifewise unless we run processor heavy apps. -
I'm quite surprised that AMD are launching the notebook chip in advance of the desktop version (given that Turion X2 is meant to have the same DDR2 mem controller as the next Athlon64's), assuming the article is right (not that I'd be complaining! ). Then again I guess Intel has done the same with a bigger gap with the Core Duo (I know it's not quite the Conroe, but it's along those lines).
-
I think they both will come out around the same time.
On other news.

Great! Originally, I was gonna get a Turion in May because I couldn't wait until June for the Dual Core. Now, I have the choice of seeing if there will be a 17" dual core in the first place, seeing if I can afford it, and being a guinea pig of new technology. OR, I can get the regular Turion, a time tested processor that's not quite as fast. What do I do?
Also, a dual-core Turion @ 1.6GHz should be able to out perform a Turion ML-44 @ 2.4 GHz, right? I'm asking so that should I be able to only afford the low end dual cores, I could be able to decide between the 2. I would do everything in my power to get the top of the line ones, for bragging rights of course!:amd64: -
Whether a dual-core 1.6 is faster than a 2.4 single core will depend on what you're doing at the time.
If you're running lots of programs at once, then the system is likely to be more responsive, or if you're running a demanding multithreaded application, then you'll probably get a speed boost. In other cases the 2.4 Turion will probably be faster.
Having said that, I'm assuming that the single core turions don't have dual-channel mem controllers (which were only introduced with S939 on the desktop athlons). So the turion X2 will probably bring both dual-channel and DDR2 (though the hardware sites are saying that there's no performance boost from DDR2 unless you go up to 800MHz). -
MGS2392, applications that cannot use dual core capabilities won't benifit, and hence Turion and Turion X2 will have almost identical performance clock for clock. But using any application that supports dual core, or multiple applications at once the X2 should really smoke the competion (single cores). A gain of aprox 75% over a simillarly clocked single core Turion.

I WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I told you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It even came faster than i tought! I really think that in june 06 we might see a MSI Turion x2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Turion X2 in May...
