"And have your fingers ready to delete a lot of unnecessary software."
I assume that you mean deleting the pre-installed Windows XP
and replacing it with a superior Linux distribution like FC3!!!!!

thanks for the great review Rev. We (NotebookReview.com) always recommend going with a base amount of 512MB of RAM but in doing reviews we prefer to review the notebook in its out of the box configuration. Unfortunately the Tecra A3 suffers from a 256MB deficiency in RAM and this really hurt it in the review. The slow hard drive doesn't help either. Just remember when buying this notebook you're going to have to shell out more money for upgraded RAM at least.

I read your review with great interest since I plan to buy the latest Toshiba Tecra A3 (PTA30C-LH101E). This model come standard with also a Pentium M730-1.6GHz 533MHz FSB but now with a 1x512MB DDR Ram & a HD of 60GB (5400 RPM). I guess that Toshiba also read your review and improved this machine!!!
One thing perhaps you could help me with; is there enough space to plug a USB wireless mouse and still have access to other 2 USB ports?
Great review with greath picture.
Thanks and have a nice day.

It would really dependon the adapter. If it's fat you'll only get one more of the ports. Maybe a USB hub at your desk qould be easier to work with?

Even with my tiny road mouse (and correspondingly sized USB plug), I was only able to plug in two items at a time. Seems like a waste to me, but, as Brian says, a USB hub would go a long way to solving this problem.

Hi, I've just formattet my new Tecra A3 (even for partitioning the 60Gb HD!)...
I've installed the XP SP2, but many drivers where not included...
I've installed quite all the available drivers from Toshiba website, but the infrared device doesn't work. it looks like the hardware was not installed! Even if I've installed the correct drivers...
Is there anyone have had the same problem or may suggest a solution?!
Thanks! -
So would I be right in saying that this laptop cannot compare to the Tecra M2 in terms of build quality? Is the lid still alloy or has it gone plastic?

I have the same problem with 13 Tecra A3's. I opened a support call with Toshiba close to a year ago that was escalated up to their highest engineering level but they said they could not provide a fix for the low sound volume issue. I was wondering if you were ever able to find a way to make the volume louder on the Tecra A3's? Thanks,

I need help from anyone who can assist.
My Toshina has permanently placed the Function drop down keys onto my desktop - it appears permanently and I would like to remove this annoying problem.
Thank you
Keith
