Toshiba has unveiled configurations for its newly-announced flagship notebook, the Qosmio X505. The X505 features an 18.4-inch display, 1GB Nvidia GeForce GTS 360M graphics, Intel Core i5/i7 processors, and built-in 7.1 surround sound. Dual drive bays with available Solid State Disks (SSDs) and up to 6GB of DDR3 memory round out the specifications.
Several pre-built X505 models are available. The base X505-Q860 model is $1,199.99 and includes a Core i5-430M processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive. The next step up is the $1,499.99 X505-Q870, which upgrades the Q860's specifications to a Core i7-720QM processor and Blu-ray drive. The top-end $1,899.99 X505-Q880 adds an additional 2GB of RAM over the Q870 for a total of 6GB and a 64GB SSD in addition to the 500GB 7200RPM hard drive.
The Qosmio X505 is available now through ToshibaDirect.com and Toshiba resellers.

I've seen these pop up on Bestbuy.com. Not a bad system, but I have to rule it out because I want LED backlighting :(

Concerning gamers, the base 860 model has the best bang for the buck ratio. The i5 430 is inline with a T9600 or T9800. The GTS 360M performs similarily to the 8800M GTX, and should drive most games fluently at native res. It's big, but if that is what you are looking for, I don't see a better deal out there for $1200.

The only thing I think the $1,200 model should have is a Blu-ray drive, considering that even sub-$1,000 machines are including them these days. Other than that, these are solid home multimedia stations with the best notebook speakers in the business (harman/kardon). The speakers in previous Qosmios have been impressive (for a notebook).

I'm kind of surprised they couldn't squeeze in Sli this time. Prices are much more competitive though, thank you Asus!

Does this hold a candle to Gateway's FX series. P-7811 fx, P-7805u?

Hmm. Looks nice. The top end version seems a bit over-kill though for the price, considering the graphics card. Nice SSD though. 1080p I assume? I'd consider it just for the indubitably wicked speakers.

If you notice, the current X500 series (top image) is noticeably thinner than the previous X300 series (bottom image) and probably why they couldn't squeeze in SLI.

Yet another shoddy piece of gloss from Toshiba...
