Google Chromehas much to recommend it as a browser, but a veteran FireFox or habitual Internet Explorer user may be hesitant to give up the add-ons or plug-ins that make their favorite web browsers more useful. Chrome extensions are the answer here, as they replicate or replace the functionality found in typical browser plug-ins. Below we list the top 10 Chrome extensions to get you started.

    Nice.

    I use:

Adblock (The one add-on that I really missed from FF)
Docs Viewer (I find this to be a very handy as I open PDF's all day long for school)
Google Dictionary (If you have friends who use big words this is a must. However, it can be annoying if you are used to double clicking to select text.)
Google Mail Checker Plus (There are tons of Gmail checkers. I like this one because I can see what came in without having to open Gmail.)
Google Voice (A must if you are Google Voice user!)

The gmail one does not seem to work for me. I have to go to the gmail page before it will intricate my mail box, otherwise it is just gray with a question mark

Good write up ... always good to have more (good) competition in the browser arena imo.

    Many thanks! :)

Do you have the "keep me signed in" boxed checked? Or do sign in every time check your email? I believe the extension requires you to be logged in to Gmail before it will work.

    Nice write-up Jay!

Google Translate would be in my top 10 list. It's uncanny. We're witnessing the birth of The Universal Translator.

The official Google one-click RSS bookmark extension is essential for me too. I like to keep my RSS reading simple.

Alas I just bailed on my most previous attempt to go "all-Chrome" because of two problems:

    1. Chrome disables screen power-saving. I guess power-saving is not implied in "don't be evil". After switching to Chrome I woke up at 2am to find a ghostly glow emanating from my office - four LCD's still powered on. There is a workaround which involves fiddling with your screen saver timeouts. I wonder how much energy Chrome has wasted due to this?

    2. None of the ad blocker extensions work as smoothly as in FireFox. There is often a subliminal flash of the ad, and/or formatting issues around the resulting blank space.

I do like the speed of Chrome and it's minimalist aesthetic. It is continuously improving, and more extensions every day. I'll check it out again in a few months.

Foxtabs works best for me, resembling opera's speed dial but with more options under its hood. Love it.

Light resources, and speed sold me out. :)
