Tom Bihn Buzz Sling Bag Review

Tom Bihn has released an updated version of their over the shoulder sling bag, called the Buzz. We tested the last version a while back and liked that one, so we were excited to see the changes in the latest model.

The biggest change in this version of the Buzz, incidentally one of the most popular models Tom Bihn sells, is the capacity is larger. The new notebook compartment has room for machines up to 14.9&quot; x 9.6&quot; x 1.3&quot;. This means many of the more trim 14” and 15.4” models should fit without issue.

It’s not just about size though, several other new features make the Buzz versatile. They’ve added a waist strap that thankfully is easy to remove. I’m sure it’s great for riding a bike or Vespa to work, but for those of us who don’t partake; it could get in the way. The padding around the notebook compartment is better, with added padding in the bottom of the bag. I’d like to see more bottom protection still, with impact-resistant material that would better absorb shock.

The shoulder strap has also been modified. It’s a little thicker than the old one and quite comfortable. I’m also happy to report that the cell phone holder in the strap is large enough to support popular smartphones. My Moto Q slipped in and out without problem. The only down side about the strap is that it goes over the right shoulder and across the torso, which obstructs the left chest pocket in a button-down shirt. I find this mildly annoying when travelling as I often keep my boarding pass in that pocket for easy access. It’s no deal breaker by any stretch, I just wonder how it would work if the strap were on the other side.

In terms of storage, space is pretty slim, but that’s also the point. In the main compartment there’s room for the notebook, and a few odds and ends. I generally load up a magazine, papers and my power cord there. The small pocket in the front has two pen holders and two other pouches. I have been going free form in there too, just tossing in the few necessities I need. Tom Bihn also has some clip in pouches that can add a little more storage. I use the one pictured to hold business cards. Thankfully they’ve also included a water bottle holder, something I think should be requisite with any bag. Even if you don’t carry water, it’s nice to have around for on the fly storage.

After several weeks of wearing and using the new Buzz, I’m pleased and can easily recommend it to anyone looking for a sling bag. It’s not cheap, but the quality is worth the price.

Pros:

• Well made, durable materials
• Design stands out from what you find at big box retailers

Cons:

• Bottom padding could be improved
• Many may find the bag too expensive

just wondering...if i leave my incase sleeve on my 13in macbook, will it still fit in the built in sleeve? i want to leave the incase sleeve on for added protection.
