The Alienware m17x was unveiled way back in November of 2007, but it hastaken until this week for the first buyers to start receiving their systems. A few forum members started receiving their m17x gaming notebooks this week.

Forum member Mennenth received his sytem two days ago, here are his first reactions:

First thing, this thing is HUGE! I knew it was going to be big, but good grief. The only other laptop I have ever used is my brothers 3 year old Powerbook G4. (that was his graduation gift, the m17x is mine). The m17x dwarfs that thing. Its weight also is pretty massive, I would only recommend using on your lap if you are also a big, strong, person. Even the powerbrick is rather large.

When I took it out of the cloth sleeve it comes with, the first thing I noticed was the matte black finish. The only area that is glossy is the area around the screen. It has no blemishes on it, no scratches, or other such imperfections that I could see.

When I opened the case, I could not hear any creaking, and the screen is solid. It does not move while I am typing this. And on that note, there is no keyboard flex, save for the same area as the
m15x, around the arrow keys. And even there it is very slight.

I went into command center. The only color area I have changed so far is the keyboard. I went through all the colors and noticed no color bleeding. So far thats all I've done with the CC.

As far as the screen itself, I love it. It does has a glossy finish and not matte. There is plenty of space to work with at the 1920x1200 resolution, which is precisely what I need as I am going to go into a graphic artist program in college. I dont have any blu ray movies, but I do intend on buying some. Thats why I go the blu ray drive. Right now, I am watching a standard DVD though. It looks better when not full screened. At full screen there is a lot of fuzz going on. But thats to be expected from trying to play any less then hi def media on a hi def screen.

The config Mennenth has is fairly basic, with Nvidia 8600 cards in dual array, a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo and 1GB of RAM (he might want to bump that up). The total cost of the system was $2,700, but considering it was a graduation present apparently it was gratis complements of the parents. Not a bad gift. It's a cool-looking notebook nonetheless, I like the black a lot. I would like to see Alienware release one with a skullcap lid design.

I've had to delete a great number of posts in this thread. If you don't have something constructive to say, then don't say anything at all.

Regarding the origins of this machine, please read the article more closely:
    This is Mennenth's laptop.

Indeed it is an awesome laptop, and it`s much thinner than I expected....
I just want a coup de gras if the 8800M GTX SLI won`t manage the heat.
    Here's to a better future!

The most werent deleted because anyone here gets paid by dell to delete them (as far as i know =P) but rather because of the nature of the comments...kind of flaming.

I'm wondering that myself - I'm in a queue to get one, but other than being told "yours will ship after the first batch goes to customers", I have nothing to go on.
That's a long time for sure, almost two months already. I hope it meets your expectations when it arrives. Please post about it in our Alienware forum when you get it.

They are on loan, we have to send them back after the loan period is up. We are never allowed to keep review units, it unfortunately doesn't work that way.

Our reviews bring more people to this site. We are number one on the list when people type "notebook review", more people > more advertising > more money for us. Plus, Dell is a sponsor of this site anyway.

I think it is but not sure - I really like the fact that I found that kind of power and resolution in a 15.4in screen and only 6.5 lbs.
