There are many facets to buying a notebook, but when you are on a budget, sometimes the most important one is price. Buying a budget notebook can be difficult, as the old proverb "you get what you pay for" usually proves to be true.

To buy a notebook at an affordable price, consumers have to be willing to compromise, as even the best budget devices are not without their faults. The best method to ensuring that you get the right budget device for you is to figure out what you need and be willing to concede almost everything else. To make this process simpler, we've compiled five of the best budget notebooks under $500, all of which offer their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

Pretty good list. I love Lenovo. I ended up getting an ASUS though (for my wife.. I run laptops in the $1200+ range due to my gaming needs), as when I was shopping nothing Lenovo was powerful for me in that price range (all were much more expensive, in the 600+ range for a 3rd gen i5)

I ended up getting the ASUS K55A On-sale. it was only $470. biggest benefit is a 3rd gen intel i5 with Intels HD 4000, a 750gb hard drive, and , windows 8, and 6gb of ram. some may not see this as a benefit but i've been running the RTM for awhile and honestly, I have no problems with it.

have yet to test it -- as its gift wrapped under the tree now, so we wont know fully how the build quality is until after x-mas.

I'm not one for ACER. they're usually "Hit or Miss" in terms of quality, and typically dont last much more than 2 years. ASUS has much better customer service from my own personal experience.

not sure what the K55A is running in terms of price these days, but if you can find it for the $500 mark with a 3rd gen intel i5 -- i think it'd be hard, if not impossible, to beat.

These are just my thoughts. As always YMMV.
