The monsoon rains that have created flood conditions in Thailand since July are expected to have a significant impact on computer manufacturers and production worldwide, mostly affecting desktop and notebook PC systems.

The downpours and flooding, the worst in 50 years, have forced the closure of hundreds of factories in and around the capital city of Bangkok. These businesses produce a third of the country’s total output of hard drives, or about 120m units per year, notes market research International Data Corp. Thailand produces roughly a quarter of the world's hard drives, according to market intelligence company iSuppli.

Not to criticize this article, but what about human life? What about the impact it has had on Thailand's infrastructure? How many people have suffered?

I think we can be patient enough and have enough humanity and compassion to not worry about HDDs or computers right now, and instead focus our efforts on helping our fellow people in Thailand.

Oh man, worldwide hard drive production is temporarily down 8.3%! As if this is permanent, there is no backlog of hard drives, and factories worldwide are at full capacity. This is a non-issue. Nobody is going to notice except that maybe a certain drive they wanted to buy gets out of stock for a couple weeks.

Um, I thought most of electronics production was done in China? Unless I missed something? I just don't see how this could affect much of anything in the electronics industry.

25% of HDD production is in Thailand, which is flooding. It will probably have some effect, its not like world is falling, but probably a few dollars more for HDD's.

But they said only 1/3 of that 25% production is affected.

"...expected to have a significant impact..."

    Indeed.

I work in China and the Made-In-Thailand Hitachi 2.5" drive I bought a week ago has jumped about $20 at the online site I bought from. Elsewhere the same, with NewEgg China being the standout opportunist: a $30 bump in price over a period of a few days.

Not a few dollars but $50 to $200 for hard drive. Newegg.com, Microcenter, and Frys sell 2TB hard drive for 150-200 a piece.
