Sony to Repair for Notebooks Affected by Faulty Nvidia Chips
Sony has at last admitted that "a small percentage" of its VAIO notebooks have been affected by faulty Nvidia graphics cards. The models affected include the FZ, AR, C, LM, and LT series; Sony is offering to repair them for free if they are within four years of the purchase date, even if they have no existing warranty.

Free repairs without a warranty? Good job Sony, your helping to fix Nvidia's problem.
-
That's a very nice gesture on their part.

Yes, very good of Sony. Nvidia, on the other hand...
There's a reason I went with ATI for my desktop. -
I now have more respect for sony

I like it. It's funny though how the notebookcheck article states that Sony has dragged its feet up to this point, and is doing less than other brands.

At least it's taking responsibility for Nvidia's damage. Hope the GPUs they put on the repair models wouldn't fail again.

The fact that Sony will admit/fix the issue and the tossers at HP won't.... just makes it all the more infuriating.

I thought HP did provide repair for some laptops? Although I think Sony is the only to give you three-year warranty on video card, others gave only two years
-
Some is the operative word. They repaired the very tip of the iceberg... that's about it. I remember going over their list- it was a very very limited amount of models. It's basically the equivalent to Ford issuing a recall due to explosions of their V8, but only if you got that V8 along with... furry seats.
I have honestly yet to read a single post about someone who actually got their GPU repaired. We hear about them crashing and dying left and right.... but nobody seems to be covered.
OH, and if I'm not mistaken, they will only repair those very limited models up to three-months from the end of the standard one year warranty.
Back to our engine example, it equates to the V8 recall only if you ordered the furry seats and the.... pink headliner.
Basically, 2 people got their GPUs repaired out of 1,343,340,999,394 failures.
Tossers. -
At Chaz, link not working.

HP has listed a few models with faulty nvidia chips, but my friend's dv2700 frying pan is not one among those. Now she is taking care of the GPU like a baby and maintaing the temps around 55-66 C, and trying to keep it at 80 -83 under load. Hope it will live for some time.
And hope sony users have better luck. -
had the same problem on my notebook, and the warranty has expired in June, I reported the problem in July and HP would not pay for repair.

My HP had a bad card that failed after the factory warranty. I managed to get it repaired through the Costco extended warranty. The new one failed a year later. I am now going through the extended warranty benefit through my credit card company.
I applaud Sony for at least trying to fix the problem. Because of the issue with the card and poor CS from HP I will never buy another HP product or Nvidia product again unless I have no choice or one of them steps up and fixes everything.
