Welcome to intermediate video editing, kids: Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9. In my film classes, Sony Vegas would regularly be mentioned as a popular alternative for video editing against Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro, with cash-strapped students opting to use Vegas instead of the more expensive pro-grade suites. It isn't too difficult to see why.

I've used Sony Vegas Pro 8 for a while now and am looking forward to upgrading to 9 soon. I had never really used a video editor before, not even WMM. I found it much easier to learn and use than other video editing suites and it works well for the simple purpose I use it for. Adobe Premiere looks far more 'daunting' in my opinion and most of the high end video editing softwares would be wasted on my needs. Still, nice review

Tanks for the complete review Pulp!

I however, will not purchase any Sony product because they have always been vigorous proponents of DRM schemes.

Adobe software in general looks really daunting. I had the privilege of cutting my teeth on old school Premiere before it started to look really freaking scary. But I had to take a class on After Effects to get the fear of that one to go away.

The thing is, once you know what all the windows are for, Premiere's actually really, really simple. The problem with all these simpler editors is that basic entry-level film cuts like L-cuts are far too difficult to do. Use dissolves and transitions all you want when you start, but eventually you'll learn nothing works quite as well as a straight cut, especially one with sound leading in or out (like an L-cut!)

Completely agree, I was using it recently for a class project and far too based on context menus but the speed of exporting the movie was pretty darn good.

Hmmmmm, There is some confusion going on here. You should not compare this Vegas 9 ( Vegas studio ) to Premiere or FCP. This is a crippled version of Vegas. Vegas 9 pro is the real deal and at least for me is far easier and faster to edit with than premiere or FCP, and can also be used as a DAW. On the sound features alone Vegas craps all over premiere or FCP. It's not even a contest.

You don't even need to use trimmer ( source ) window in Vegas. Just drop a clip on the timeline select what you need and cut away. Basic fades are just dragging one clip into another as far as you like the fade to be. Far, far easier than premiere or FCP once you get the ancient workflows of those two out of your head.
