It appears the new Sony VAIO NR laptop will be arriving soon based on a spec sheet leaked from a German website. It's a pretty basic 15.4" screen laptop with Core 2 Duo processor and integrated graphics. The curvy design makes a mostly run-of-the-mill machine look a little more interesting though.

The VAIO NR will come in two colors, the lower spec machine in a silver finish with the higher spec machine in a darker charcoal grey/black finish. The European low-end silver model of the NR will be model number VGN-NR11SS with the following specs:

• Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 Processor (1.5GHz, 2MB Cache, 667MHz FSB)
• 2GB RAM
• Intel X3100 graphics
• 15.4" WXGA X-Black LCD (glossy display, X-Black = XBrite in North America)
• 200GB HD
• 802.11 a/b/g wireless
• Ports: 4 USB, FireWire, VGA out, headphones, microphone
• Slots: Memory Stick, SD card, ExpressCard 34mm

The Sony VAIO NR11Z/T will have a faster processor and come in a darker color seen below.

The specs for the NR11Z/T will be as follows:

• Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 Processor (2GHz, 2MB Cache, 800MHz FSB)
• 2GB RAM
• Intel X3100 graphics
• 15.4" WXGA X-Black LCD (glossy display, X-Black = XBrite in North America)
• 200GB HD
• 802.11 a/b/g wireless
• Ports: 4 USB, FireWire, VGA out, headphones, microphone
• Slots: Memory Stick, SD card, ExpressCard 34mm

Overall this looks to be a budget version of the existing Sony VAIO FZ series without such things as the instant-on media, no dedicated graphics and a more rounded looking design. Nothing terribly exciting, and no word on pricing or when to expect the VAIO NR on shelves. We'd guess sometime this fall and based on specs a price starting at $899 or so.

Very run of the mill, but at least it looks better than the old N. I'd take a dv6500 over this any day.

First they rip off Apple (Original VAIO N), now they rip of HP. And they can't even get that right! The new NR looks like a boring, plain version of the HP Pavilion series. Sony needs to innovate with their own, original design, not rip of others.

And with an Intel X3100 GMA = no go for me. Then again, many people don't need a fancy dedicated graphics card, so as long as this has a decent price (which seems unlikely, cosidering it's Sony), this could be a decent (but boring) notebook.

I would've disagreed with you if you said that two years ago. In exception to the TZ series, all their laptop lines now feel and look... cheap. Poor design and subpar GPU options? I can't agree with you more.

Actually, the N was pretty reasonably priced, and this is expected to be as well, at around $900.

I don't care about the specs (in this instance) as all I'm wondering is - can a machine, possibly, look any more b.o.r.in.g. ?

Last month, I was looking at some (special edition) version of the HP Pavillion dv6xxx series (maybe, it was the dv2xxx series). Anyway, it was bronze in color, and to my eye, design wise, looked absolutely superb.

I don't think it's boring at all. It's understated elegance. Designing good looking notebooks is one of the few things Sony can do well.

I don't really see what everyone's complaining about. The N series is their budget 15.4". It's about friggin' time they updated it to Santa Rosa and Core 2 Duo... so here it is. I really fail to see how anyone could call it a ripoff of HP. What? Yeah it's the budget CPUs and integrated graphics... if you want more powerful stuff then go get an FZ instead.

That said, I'm not sure I like the rounded edges much... and I don't know why they don't just sell an FZ with the budget CPUs and x3100 instead. Maybe to allow the FZ to keep some cachet as a more "premium" product... I don't know.

I think its better looking than Hp Pav, but then, I don't like "flashy" laptops. However, with FZ and CR, I don't see much point in existence of this model.

id say to bridge the gap between them yet it does resemble the CR in specs the FZ being a bit more powerful on the GPU side if im not mistaken yet sony has these thing with ""premium"" high end laptops usually over priced but great quality this seems like a budget sony notebook

I think it looks alright..bit bland perhaps but not bad by any means.

I personally really like all the the sonys i've used. The thing I find with them is they aren't too flashy, but they aren't boring, they are chic and cleanly designed and just seem to fit nicely in any circumstance..especially in the work place.

I'd happily use an SZ (and most sonys for that matter) anywhere..whether it be home, work..doesn't matter.

I think you're correct. There are FZ models with the GMA X3100 selling for premium prices, so having an FZ with a budget CPU would detract customers from the "higher-end" models.

I would probably have a TZ by now if it weren't for the same 950 graphics chip for the past two years. Now that design is cool IMHO. I'll wait on the TZ and the 64 gig SSD.
