Sony has announced the VAIO N notebook series today. The VAIO N is a 15.4" screen notebook available with an IntelCore Solo or Core Duo processor that comes in three flavors to match your home decor: creamy coffee brown, black or white.

Based on the press release from Sony, they really are playing up the chic factor of this notebook more so than the technical specs of it. According to Mike Abary, vice president of VAIO product marketing, the VAIO N design was conceived for the "culturally creative" individual mind, who is focused on an "organic lifestyle." "From the furniture you sit on to the artwork you hang on your walls, you coordinate every aspect of your home's style so why hide your PC? These new notebooks are designed to accent your interior design, as well as your life."

So if you're an organic food nut and keep lots of fine art on the walls of your home and would like a creamy coffee colored VAIO N to fit into the look of your living room, this laptop could be right up your ally!

Outside of the design talk, the VAIO N does have some stuff inside that makes it work as a computer, and with a Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) processor it's not a weakling. But the graphics are integrated.

The VAIO N110G/W model that starts at $1,000specs are as follows

    • Intel Core Solo T1350 1.86GHz (Core Duo offered on higher configs)
    • Integrated Intel 950 Media Accelerator Graphics
    • 15.4" XBRITE-ECO WXGA display (widescreen 1280 x 800)
    • 80GB HD with 5400RPM spin
    • Ports and Slots: Ethernet, headphone, microphone, FireWire, MemoryStick/SD slot, 2 USB 2.0 ports, monitor out, ExpressCard
    • Weight: 6.8lbs
    • Dimensions: 14.4" (w) x 12" - 16" (h) x 10.5 (d)
    • Wireless: 802.11a/b/g Intel 3945
    • Colors: Wenge Brown, Black, White

Full specs for the VAIO N110G/W can be found here.

seems like to me it is a little overpriced for the feature set...and now ever so slightly out of date. reminds me of sony selling the FJ series with Pentium M, and i think they still do.

I agree with night_2004. I also think it kinda looks like a MBP. Nonetheless, it's very slick looking.

It's somewhat of a marketing thing, they offered some new design colors and renamed it the VAIO N -- there maybe other small differences and I don't if the chassis is the same or not, since they're not touting this as "mobile" but rather a sit at home notebook I bet it's kinda cheaply made, there's no telling from the pics though.

Appearance or feature set, nothing exciting at all!
    The FE actually looks better.
And this new N weighs 6.8lbs. It is heavier than Dell's and hp's.
Sony is the first and only brand that offers Solo on a 15.4" machine.
Another great improvement after the P-M FJ. Good job, Sony!

For some reason, this angle makes it look like a MacBook Pro:

Interesting notebook though. Definitely targeting the mainstream "in" crowd with this one.

I agree Chaz it reminds me more of a Macbook Pro or maybe the love child between a Macbook Pro and an LG S1. I don't think it looks much like the FE. This notebooks looks alot squarer looking. I find it to be quite attactive. Unfortunately it seems outdated like others mentioned. They really went the extra mile with the organic stuff. Sony X-Brite ECO. Does ECO stand for an environmentally friendly screen?

    Introducing the VAIObook Pro.

The notebook just screams "cheap build, outdated components".

    I'm confused about the dimensions

Is the thickness of the laptop suppose to be 1.2'' - 1.6''?

if I didn't know better, I'd say this is just a older model that Sony's trying to get rid of.

Sony doesn't care much about performance , they care about the look of their computers. My lil cousin was about to spend her saving money on a pink laptop and she doesn't know anything about computer except get on google images and search anime pix(she's only 12). Luckily i stopped her from doing that studpid decision. The only laptop that's worth the money and performance/look may be their 17" feature with blueray drive. I've seen their previous 17" . That was an old version of Sony but that thingy is loaded it about 2 years old or more. Specs ( 2 years ago) 2.ghz P M, 2gb RAM (Wat the!!), dvd burner , 60gb, RAdeon ( i don't know which chipset) and wireless, bluetooth. That thing was top of the line during that time and it costs 6000$ or so. Tha'ts what i heard from the owner.

You do know that for most people a P-M is just as fast as a Core Duo? A better videocard and harddrive can easily tip the scale in favor of P-M as well.

Well it may not be for most users here, but Sony knows that a snazzy exterior will sell laptops too. How many people out there will buy it because it's pretty and not even know how weak its components are? Quite a few I imagine.

If I didn't shop around for deals or care about performance or configuration, Sony VAIOs would get consideration I'm sure purely based on their designs.

I finally got to play with one (along with the C series) at a sony show yesterday (main feature was the PS3).

This thing really DOES look like a macbook pro in person. However its got a significantly bigger profile, even if they're both 15.4. keyboard is the same style as the FE and SZ..but no where near as mushy as the SZ.
