I bought the FZ260E recently and can confirm the fan noise problem.
This was a disappointment as I didn't notice it in the shop and should
have remembered that THE big problem for any laptop at 2+ GHz must
be heat removal, which usually means noise or a large dissapator.

My first thought was to manufacture a kind if flat plastic "exhaust pipe"
to cover the grill opening on the left and duct the noise around the back.
This might work but it means carrying an extra peice of plastic around,
but if the noise is a pain then you have little choice. You just have to
be a bit of a craftsman to construct it so it will fit snuggly and look good.
You could make it out of thin card board and paint it with some kind of
    glue to make it stiff.

An extra step would be to add a large 9-12 inch fan to the end of the
above "exhaust pipe" and run it at low revs. This you will not hear but
it will drag enough air through the grill exit to keep the internal FZ fan
to low silent speed. The problem here is to find an elegant way to get
the 12 volt connection to the inside, which can probably be done via
the external power plug on the right side. But this is pushing it a bit!

Another way is to open the FZ up, find the fan and replace it with another
that is silent - if you can find one. Many fans have this whining noise
because the fan blades are too close to the rib cage holding the motor and
if you can remove the ribs or increase the distance the noise disappears.

There are solutions but you have to be a bit of a "re-designer" and run the risk
of voiding the warranty, but it depends what you want. If the "exhaust pipe"
approach works and looks stylish you can make some money selling it to
other noise-disappointed owners who would probably be grateful for it.

Otherwise my 260E is great. I split the disk installing openSUSE 10.3 so I now
have both Windows Vista and SUSE 10.3 LINUX and a double boot option.
(SUSE can also access the Windows partitions). There were no problems
installing and I am quite impressed with the choice I have. LINUX I need for
my Mathematical/Engineering software but Vista is good for Media stuff and
burning DVDs. The only problem with LINUX might be having to install extra
wifi software to get wireless internet - but that is not so difficult.

Sony added Penryn processors to the FZ choices today. If they would now only add a WSXGA+ screen, I would decide between the FZ and the XPS M1530.

ok everyone. The answer for AV button.
I was thinking of getting a FZ. Saw the review here went to the Sony shop to test out. The AV button wasn't working properly. It was rebooting the system. So I had an online chat with a SONY analyst today. 3

He said that the AV button doesn't work normally with NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400GT graphics.

And I asked why. He said " our engineers are working on it to resolve the issue."

I asked " why don't you post a notice to the buyers? don't you think that is more fair?"

He said " I will pass your recommendation on to my supervisor."

I said " if I get a FZ4000 CTO, given it is out in Feb, will that still have the same problem?"

He answered " we don't have info on that model yet, so can't tell at this stage."

I am quite disappointed that this is Sony who is not really telling the truth. It is very misleading...

I think the AV button may work sometimes, but definitely not all the time...

    I don't think I am getting a FZ now..... :(

Obviously, none of you owns a Viao FZ notebook. I purchased one a few months ago and have to say that I am very disappointed. It jumps from webpage to webpage inexplicably causing me to re-enter data...sometimes several times, freezes at odd moments (again without obvious reason), and shuts down without warning. A colleague has had the exact same experience so I can't blame it on my having a "lemon". Tried getting support or help from Sony but none has been forthcoming.

I owned FZ and have to say very very happy with it. No noise at all, compare to my HP DV6700 SE next to it, the HP was screaming all night long while the FZ was quite, EXTREMEE quiet and I just love it, I work at night so the noise issue is one of concerns

FZ: Core 2 Duo 2 Gb Ram
HP: Turion X2 2 GB Ram

Boot time, HP was wayyyy faster, boot up Vista in 40 sec, while I run the benchmark, the FZ was winner for sure. Is this might be because the FZ has slow harddrive speed ?? I don't know, but the lookwise, I love FZ more than the white HP, FZ is look more elengant, professional, sleek ... whatever you called it.
