It looks like Sony is going to be releasing a new notebook soon, the VAIO AR series laptop has shown up on a Canadian website for pre-order. The VAIO AR190 has a Blu-Ray optical drive, Core Duo processor, 17" widescreen, nVidia Go 7600 card, built-in TV tuner and 200GB of storage.
VAIO AR Series 17" screen notebook (view large image)Above is a picture of this rather large laptop from Sony. It's quite obvious that Sony is using this media center geared laptop to further push its Blu-Ray media technology. Toshiba last week released a Qosmio G35 machine with a HD-DVD optical drive, the competing next generation optical disk format to the Sony backed Blu-Ray technology.
The specs are very impressive on this Sony, with a built-in TV tuner and 200GB of hard drive space it's quite obvious Sony expects users to utilize the AR as a media hub in which you could watch TV and record content to the ample hard drive space available. The selection of media ports for outputting media is also very good, an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port for output to HDTV, FireWire, S-Video (out/in) and VGA/Monitor-out, HDMI to DVI-D adapater round out the options.
The nVidia 7600 256MB card is a bit of an unknown as we've not seen this in a notebook before, while this won't be a high-end gaming graphics card it should at least provide ability to play games such as Half Life 2. We expect to hear more about the VAIO AR and expected release dates at a Sony event on Monday evening in New York City. In England the VAIO AR has shown up in a catalog as the AR11S and AR11B. Stay tuned for more, full specs for the VAIO AR190 / AR11Snotebook are at the bottom of this article.

$4,000 for that? That is Sony for ya

Take out Blu Ray drive and the price should be around ~US$2600. That would make it a resonable price for a Sony.

At least this model has a proper WUXGA screen resolution for high-definition video content. Some Fujitsu's have only WXGA+, such as the ones released over in Japan - that's not acceptable for a system featuring a Blu-Ray or HD DVD drive.
I think this is a very nice looking system, certainly a formidable competitor to the Qosmio. Price is going to hurt it though.
I'd be interested to see benchmarks for the Go7600GT - given how strong the desktop 7600GT is, I have pretty high standards for this. Most likely it's a higher-clocked version of the Go7600.

Wow...awesome laptop, looks sexier than Qosmio
Yeah, I agree that the price is a bit high, but it is sure for initial/launch unit. -
About blue-ray & hd-dvd:
I hate that, when they are introducing 2 or more different competing formats
The same story as with SVGA graphics cards on DOS, DVD+- and etc...
I won't buy a notebook until there will be drives, that support both formats... -

Great notebook, great resolution. But I heard that Blue Ray disk could not write normal CD's? Is that true?
Charlie-Peru -
The drive can burn Blu-Ray discs, DVDs and CDs according to Sony's specs, but CD burning is slower than normal.

It's awesome machine. As for the price, I don't think it's worth while getting it. I would rather switch to Macpro 17".
