At least Sony thinks so, which is why they're releasing a version of their VAIO FZ 15.4" notebook with earth conscious designs. Furthemore, Sony will donate 1% of each notebook sale to organizations working to preserve the environment.
Sony will offer four different Graphic Splash Eco Edition VAIO FZ notebooks. The designs will include Carribean Water, Clay Earth, Spotted Life and Bloom. Sony is hoping to appeal to all the Al Gore followers out there, 1% of each sale will be donated to 1% For the Planet (www.onepercentfortheplanet.org/) -- an alliance of businesses committed to creating a healthier environment.

The VAIO FZ Graphic Splash Edition notebooks will start at around $1,391 and be available soon via SonyStyle.com or in Sony Style stores.

Thoughts:
-The blue lid looks cool
-What is so special about the Clay Earth one? Looks like the common piano black in the picture.
-What kind of spots are those? Sony missed the boat on spots. They could of skipped the pink blossom and put leopard print on the lid of the spotted one. Two birds with one stone.
-How politically incorrect is it to use that phrase when talking about the environment? -
I think it's funny that they're donating 1% when the premium they'll probably end up charging for these lids is higher than that. Bah...

I won't even bother with that Brian. I know another companies are just as guilty. Like the one that makes those purple Azlhiemer flash drives and donates $1 of each purchase. How wonderfully generous.

The Sonystyle.com/trade-in link isn't working, just so you know.
I checked it out, and it's only notebooks that can be traded in. They also have to be at least Pentium II.
I like the Caribbean Water design. -

If Sony would offer a WSXGA+ screen I would seriously consider the FZ. My wife has an SZ that is very slick. With WXGA only it's out of the running for me.

If every company gave 1% of every sale it could solve a lot of the world's problems. I'm fine with that number. Just think: if the gov. increased your income taxes by 1% it would make a difference to you.

however it would almost resemble a poor apology for how much they pollute the environment each year (espescially technology related companies)
batteries, lead, mercury, leeching chemicals, yeah 1% is mighty generous....
It's a joke that isn't funny and a pathetic attempt to cash in on people that think they will do so much good for the planet by purchasing an expensive laptop and having 1% donated.
This just sickens me
The best offer I've seen thus far is after you buy an Apple computer they will recycle any computer related junk -less than 140lbs in 2 boxes for free. Thats a lot of stuff, they pay to ship it and recycle it....just imagine 140 pounds .....
It's also nice that they do it as a perk and not a sales pitch....

Sorry Airman, I have to disagree. One percent of the World's GDP is (according to July 2007 Worldbank numbers) is $482,448,790,000 (USD). I think that some good could be done with that amount. Maybe even a lot of good. I like to consider myself an optimist and see these baby steps as being in the right direction. Apple's program is good, but the amount of toxins used and produced by their products is nothing to be proud of (I am in no way supporting any of these links, but they exist nonetheless).

Thats funny, if the Bush administration succeeds in its latest request for funding for the war in Iraq, the total cost would rise to $611.5 billion.
Thats more than 1% of the entire worlds GDP of $482.5 billion according to your statistics. I too consider myself an optimist however you seem to have stepped back from your inital perspective a bit.
Theres quite a difference in saying:
Apple does infact still use toxins in their products, as do all other manufacturers today. I didn't say they were exempt from doing such. I merely stated that they have the best environmental perk that I have seen to date.
