Intel has just released their list of most Un-wired cities in America and Seattle has taken the top spot away from San Francisco, last year's winner. Intel credits the continued growth of hotspots and WiFi usage to wireless enabled notebooks, PDAs, Tablet PCs, Smartphones and other mobile devices. Built-in WiFi is on the rise in all of these segments, and will even reach 100% saturation in laptops by 2007.
Beyond wireless growth in mobile devices, hotspots are popping up everywhere from the more mundane places like cafes and coffee shops, to ski slopes and sporting venues.
A few interesting notes:
This year's #19 Baton Rouge, La. made the biggest jump overall, climbing 67 spots from its #86 ranking last year.
Holy Toledo! Toledo, Ohio jumped a remarkable 59 spots in this year's survey, breaking into the top five (#5) after finishing #64 last year.
#29 Melbourne-Titusville-Palm Bay, Fla. up 44 spots from #73 last year.
#48 Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point, N.C. up 42 spots from #90 last year.
#27 Nashville, Tenn. up 41 spots from #68 last year.
#52 Knoxville, Tenn. up 41 spots from #93 last year.
#17 Charlotte-Gastonia, N.C.-Rock Hill, S.C. up 40 spots from #57 last year.

okay, who in Toledo city government paid off Intel to make the city look good? I'm from Ohio and have been to Toledo several times, and I just plain don't get that ranking. Columbus OH has a ton of local coffee shops with free wireless (Cup O' Joe is great) + the airport and OSU are pretty strong on that, so I can see that.
