The same 3 platter 9.5mm drive is inside the Samsung M3 2TB portable drive which has been shipping for a month or two (but has a plastic case which adds to the thickness but is somewhat less expensive).

The drive is made in what used to be the Samsung HDD factory (Samsung sold their HDD business to Seagate). Some years back Samsung produced another 3 platter 9.5mm unit in order to be the first to one of the capacity targets so the 3 platter 9.5mm configuration is not a new development.
