Will probably be at Newegg.com soon.

Seems overkill for a laptop IMO.

Why would it be overkill? I'm already maxing out my 160 GB drive with music, photos and movies. If they released a 2000 GB drive I would still be able to fill it by re-ripping all my music and movies in lossless format.

Data tends to expand to fill its container.

Plus, the added density of the platters means this 5400 RPM drive will be the same speed or faster than smaller 7200 RPM drives.

Most likely the first stocks will go to computer assemblers and not to the retail chain.

I will be interested to read the specs when Samsung get round to publishing them. A look here reveals nothing about this HDD (but I see an HM251JI which is a little faster than the old HM260JI). Will spinning 3 platters in a very tight space increase te power consumption?

    John

PS: I'm moving this to the News forum

Hi, do you know, if this HDD has on-fly encryption like Hitachci has?
    Thanks!

This helps a lot. The current 320GB is not enough for a lot of people...500GB it is then!

Here's another link about this HDD. It doesn't claim to support encryption. However, there are still no detailed specs on the Samsung HDD site.

I would expect the first stocks to go to some system builders.

or i'll put it this way. I wanna order a sager 5793 in the next day or so. I want it to arrive by the end of next week. will I be able to buy and receive shipment of this 500GB hard drive by the end of next week?

Very unlikely. People like Sager tend to be high up the list to get stocks so you might want to ask them for an eta.

They don't even have the 320GB offered everywhere, I wouldn't count on the 500GB either.

How much more does the new 500GB HD cost over the 320GB 5400RPM one... just curious... ??

If you followed that link you would see an indication of the cost difference. Deducting VAT and converting to US$ the difference is around $72. Quite reasonable, IMO, for 50% extra capacity.

    John

PS: Or look at the ZeptoUSA pricing - already in US$.

Zepto asks for 135$ over the 320GB HDD (Zepto US), which isn't that bad from my point of view.

nice to see configured laptops getting them...but still no separate retail or oem drive for me to buy. :( I already ordered my sager, its only a matter of time before my hard drive-less laptop arrives.

Zepto say that they will get some of the first of these to reach Europe, and availability currently shows as "up to 31 days". That's more than when I looked last week.

Zepto's site now shows "up to 46 days". It looks as if the boat has turned round and is heading back to the factory! :( Or maybe Zepto have sold the first batch.

I've yet to see one of these actually being available, but it looks like Tom's Hardware tested one. Samsung still haven't published the specs for this HDD. At the moment it's at the top of the performance chart, but I would expect the Hitachi 7k320 to be up there with it, once they get one and test it.

Hmm, wonder if they`ll keep the 299$ MSRP or drop it to something more reasonable.

Well, the 320/7200 is 250GB and it should be equally fast with this one,but this one has about 50% more disk space,so 50$ more is reasonable as a difference.
    As a total price,300 $ for a hdd , come on...

If you compare the Samsung 500GB with a WD 320GB 7200RPM, the WD gets a bit better transfer rates and a lot faster acces times. So if you're intending to run your OS on it, the WD will be considerably faster.

The Samsung 500GB is in the same performance range as the 320GB HDDs. It just has 3 platters instead of 2. It is the sensible choice only if 320GB isn't enough space.

However, I wonder if a 2 platter version might appear sometime. The datasheet for the HM500LI is headed "Spinpoint M6(3D)". I assume the 3D means 3 disks so maybe we will see another version which is 2D.

I think I`ll go for the 320/7200 one. Seems to have very impressive benchmarks, and the 500 GB one is overkill in terms of space and price.
    For the moment anyway...
