Online video is all the rage -- and not all of it isof thestreaming video kind such as Netflix. Real Networks has introduced RealDownloader software, for downloadingrecorded videos from YouTube and elsewhere, and then watching them at your leisure. In trying out RealDownloader, Idiscovered that the video downloading tool works like a snap. Here's how.

    Opera too has several downloaders.
Anyway Real Networks is known to install with their applications a giant amount of crap. That is why most people stopped using real video...

I prefer to use FlashGot FireFox add-on. It downloads everything flash. Flash games, flash videos, flash music players. Just be respectful of what you download, because of copyright laws and some independent artists wants to sell some songs while some songs are free.

With flashgot, you get no toolbar/other BS bloatware. The FlashGot logo will start to do an animation; NOT annoying and it won't bother you. Right click and choose which ever video/game/audio you want to download, then play the waiting game.

About the only thing that can be said for this add on is it works for IE 9. I can't think of any decent, if any free add on that can do this for free with IE 9. But then again, why would anyone want to use IE 9 which is not supported worth a crap. I use FF 6 with the download youtube videos 3.3.51 ad on which gives me a choice of which quality one to download, like mp4 HD or lower resolution etc.. Its free and works perfectly.

Firefox and other non IE browsers are aggressively supported and updated unlike IE 9 which still does not have a spell checker. Yes there is speckie and its crap. I've noticed on my slower HP dm1 machine FF 6 is running circles around IE 9 in performance. Maybe when IE 9 first came out it was decent in performance, but its pathetically weak in comparison to FF now. And when FF 7 is released that gap will widen further.

I also don't trust installing any free software from real. I'm sure they have learned their lesson but I still feel it would be bloated and calling back home every 30 seconds.

I've installed this software on several of my computers and have not found anything suspicious. What I like about this software is that it is cross-browser. I use multiple browsers, including IE; just installing one software piece is handy rather than many plug-ins.

Video download helper plugin for my favorite browser FF is more than enough. It downloads everything video and ALL video formats for FREE. If something better available for free why to spend money :p

Does it work on You Tube's site? The reason I ask is there may be legal issues when a larger company like Real decides to make software available to the masses that allow downloading off you tube. But like I said before, I think this is the first decent free if not only ad on that will allow this on IE 9.

I agree, they are going to have a hard time selling the plus version when there are a ton of free ad on's. Unless of course your dead set on using IE.

Yes, it does work with YouTube videos + IE 9. I tested that for the review.
