HP has announced it will recall memory modules in up to 900,000 laptops manufactured between March 2002 and July 2003. Lockups and bluescreens can occur due to faulty interaction between various manufacturer DRAM modules and Intel chipsets. HP's replacement program will allow a customer to receive a small kit containing a screwdriver and new memory modules to replace the faulty memory.

The following HP notebooks are covered by this recall:

    • Compaq Evo N610c, N610v, N620c, N800c, N800v, N800w, N1000c, N1000v

    • Compaq Presario 1500, 2800, x1000 and x1200

    • Compaq nx7000

    • HP Pavilion zt3000

Download this program to see if your laptop is affected: http://h30090.www3.hp.com/mmrp

HP has classified this problem as one that will affect the notebook PC industry as a whole, but so far no other manufacturers have stepped up to admit any problems or recall products.

HP's replacment program will allow a customer to receive a small kit that contains a screwdriver, memory and instructions for the customer on how to replace the faulty DRAM within the notebook. These DRAM modules can include 128MB, 256MB and 512MB versions made by manufacturers such as Samsung Semiconductor, Windbond Electronics, Infineon Technology and Micron Technology. When these manufacturers memory were used in conjunction with Intel's Intel 845MP, 845MZ, 852PM, 852GME and 855PM mobile chip sets or the Mobile Pentium 4 and Pentium M processor then lockups and various other fatal product flaws arise. The memory manufacturers were at fault says HP.

My Evo failed both memory modules. HPs little program told me that my order has been sent and I should receive a confirmation e-mail within 48 hours. Well, I done it 2 weeks ago, and I still havent heard anything. I done it again a weeks ago, and the same thing. Any suggestions?

I'm also affected by this, and was wondering if you guys could give me a tip or two.

I just sent the info to them for the replacement and would be waiting for them to send an email back in 48hrs.

What do I do next, after receiving it? Is there all the instructions or something? You see, I'm quite a klutz when handling with computers and notebooks... :D

    Waiting for a reply,
    Jillyann
