Notebook LED demand coming later than expected

A DigiTimes report states that LED backlighting demand for notebook use is taking off slower than anticipated. LED backlight manufacturers expected more 12-15-inch notebooks to adopt LED backlighting early this year, but it now looks like the demand will not reach anticipated levels until the third quarter, when new notebooks come out. A notebook panel with LED backlighting is 10-30% more expensive than one with CCFL. LED backlighting penetration rate in 2009 is expected to be 40%; 95% of notebooks and netbooks with 10-inch and smaller screens already use LED backlighting.

Weaker demand = lower prices? With luck, that may just happen. Unfortunately, the T500 that I'm looking at doesn't come with an LED screen with reasonable resolution - seems like I'll be stuck with CCFL.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have - I really like their even and bright lighting, but most of them are quite power-hungry and the laptops with those screens generally do not have the battery lifetime I need.

Dell's M4400 Precision Workstation has an option to get a 15.4" 1920x1200 RGB-LED display. I'm seriously thinking about that...

i was thinking about that too, until i found that it's glossy. besides the m4400 seems to be a very fine machine, the thing that keeps me away is the noise and heat management. i'd be immediately sold to a m4400 with the thinkpads heat and noise management.

I hope this doesn't mean we're going to have to wait even longer to start seeing 16:9 laptops with LED screens in the 16-18" range. although i would be just as happy with dual ccfl and an IPS panel instead of a TN panel. does that even exist? anyone here know of a 16:9 laptop with IPS panel?
