Sager NP9260 (Clevo D900) not available with quad-core
Sager Midern Computer Inc. has released a statement regarding the availability of Intel quad-core processors and its recently released NP9260 (Clevo D900C-based) high-end desktop replacement notebook.
Sager has found that while the D900C will accept the Q6600 quad-core processor, the system will fail if the processor is used in the long term. The Intel Q6600 30 watts over the D900C's power specification. The increased wattage brings additional heat by itself, not including environmental temperature.
Sager closed their statement with the following:
"Rest assured that we are constantly working to use the latest and greatest technology in our units. And we have requested Clevo to continue working to enable Quad-Core functionality. However, we are also committed to providing our customers with a product that will work reliably in the long term. In this case, using the Q6600 in the NP9260 would not accomplish that goal."
Please see this thread for the full announcement and forum discussion. We have a First thoughts review of the NP9260 here and expect to have a full review of this machine up in the next few weeks.
Apple announces Safari browser for Windows
At the Worldwide Developers Conference 2007, Apple's Chief Executive Steve Jobs announced that the company has developed a version of its Safari Internet browser for Windows. The move is aimed to increase marketshare; Safari is currently ranked third behind Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
A public beta version is now available for download.
MSI to ship 800,000 plus OEM notebooks in 2007
Micro-Star International is expected to ship over 800,000 OEM notebooks in 2007. A fair amount of the machines will be comprised of the company's own-brand Megabook-branded notebooks.
MSI is focusing on catching up with shipments from Gateway at the moment. Their long-term goal is to become one of the world's top ten notebook makers within three years.
IDC says portable PC shipments accelerating
According to the IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, worldwide PC shipments are predicted to go up 12.2% to 256.7 million in 2007. These figures represent a 28% year-on-year increase in portable PC volume. Desktop shipments also surpassed expectations during the first quarter.
ICD's update raises the previous projection of 11.1% from March by more than a percent. Shipments in 2008 are predicted to reach 284.4 million and 356.7 million in 2011.

Hmm
According to apple, Safari > IE > Firefox
Are those benchmark number made up? -
I think they mean in terms of number of users. I don't think that Safari will be moving up that ranking any time soon if security problems continue to plague it. ( http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9728500-7.html)

lol wow i just read that as i was installing safari to try it out...guess im sticking with good old firefox
-
texts seem to appear blurry on Safari and firefox is plenty fast for me.

I tried Safari yesterday, and I must say, it was absolutely horrendous. I can't fathom how they would have the audacity to say it was faster than firefox (and every other browser) since it's much, much slower. Also, it crashed on me when I went to Wikipedia. Compared to FF, it doesn't support spell check and restore. Safari also lacks many of the features of IE; and I can't believe I'm saying this, but even MS's software (Ie7) was much better Apple's (Safari).

sigh and Safari is going to be on iPhone?
Why would anyone install Safair when people who Mac's are not even using it. I am confuse... -
I know what you mean. I was surprised by how much I liked Ie7 as well. Maybe that is because it feels so much like FF. My browser of choice though is still FF. On my PDA I like Opera mobile (very nice). -

Firefox > Opera > ie7 > Safari
I have no reason to even try Safari right now. Firefox and Opera get nearly everything I need done. Nice try Apple, but it's just not compelling enough to try or regularly use their browser. If it's worse than ie7 then I just can't imagine using Safari then since ie7 annoys me to no end when I constantly have to wait for it to figure out what its doing (very slow and poorly programmed). -
Secondly, as I mused in the discussion threads lying around, when Jobs claimed 2 faster than IE7 and 1.6x faster than FF, I believe him in my case. For me, it indeed was faster, although for others it seems there was a negligible difference
The main problem at the moment is that Safari's page rendering needs to be corrected - it does not display pages correctly - even apple.com! Text is fuzzy and images and layout seems to be out of synch. All of which I am sure will be fixed, as it is still beta afterall
