American military supercomputer sets new record

A military supercomputer made from cell processors used in video game consoles has reached a computing milestone: 1.026 quadrillion calculations per second.

The new machine is more than twice as powerful as the IBM BlueGene/L, which was the previous fastest supercomputer.

Dubbed the Roadrunner, the new machine cost $133 million and was built by engineers and scientists from IBM and Los Alamos National Laboratory. It will maily be used to solve classified military problems, such as performing calculations to make sure nuclear weapons work correctly as they age.

The power of the Roadrunner is mind-blowing: if the world's population of six billion people used hand calculators to perform calculations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it would take them 46 years to do what the Roadrunner can do in one day.

The Roadrunner is made of 12,960 chips which are improved versions of the IBM Cell processor, and other AMD Opteron server processors. It has 116,640 processing cores. The supercomputer needs three megawatts of power, which is the amount needed to power a large suburban shopping center.

    An introduction to Clevo notebooks

CLEVO is a large Taiwanese computer company specializing in laptops. While the Clevo brand name is perhaps not widely known, their products are re-branded and sold by known boutique brand OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)... notably Sager, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, etc.
They are also considered (by whoever knows about notebooks) to design and manufacturer the best of the best notebooks in terms of superior build quality and innovative designs.

That OCZ looks nice, but it only needs an HDD, proc, RAM, and an OS.
Not a true barebones, but a good deal!

We might finally get to see what Crysis is like at max, and hopefully the frames will be 30+. Haha way to pull out the Crysis joke, guys.

And I welcome 16:9, by the way. Despite the loss of actual screen area, the screens should cater to our-ermm...horizontally perceptive inclination as humans?...

    ...

Did I mention I need to break my gaming habit? Oh yes. I had to say that somewhere.

Man that DIY is a neat idea, but the specs just won't hold up. Also, WXGA????

Yeah, I definitely expect HaloGod2007 to get his hands on the RoadRunner pretty soon and overclock it. Seriously.

Is Lenovo replacing its nvidia cards with ATI ones? I need a laptop before August, but vastly prefer nvidia's drivers to ATI's.

If Lenovo's latest Thinkpad release goes like last year, you might not have much luck until September at the earliest. BUT let's hope they avoid a repeat of that horrible delay-disaster :p As to the ATI vs Nvidia, wait for more info IMO...and if they are going all ATI then your only option is to get a T61p while you can :\

    Thanks for the Newsbit, Chaz.

Lol...you're lucky we dont have anything in the forum rules that limit post sizes.

Yeah, its a preety good deal.

I believe OCZ DIY laptop is a Compal (J)fl92. Look in the compal forum for other resellers that have the barebone with optional higher res screens(A plug deserves another plug :))

BTW, I found out the that roadrunner is pretty cheap on ebay...you can even get this mod called Wile E. Coyote(I assume its named after the creater) ;)

I am willing to bet that the new Thinkpad T61p replacement may actually be slower in the graphics department but should get significantly better battery life. Not only will the graphics card use less memory but so will the DDR3 and the LED backlit screen.

DDR3 will really help the bandwidth constraints in laptops but make buying memory a lot more expensive. There isn't any DDR3 memory on the market for laptops rights now at e-tailers.

From the available data (removed from thinkpads.com recently), I'm afraid Wxxx series will lack LED displays (at least WUXGA versions, I'm especially interested in).
However, I also hope the battery life will be longer because of application of ATi card.

Those new Thinkpads look great. It would be nice if they offered an LED screen as that is what I want. I especially like that X200, reminds me of my M1210.

I think there are way too many screen sizes around. 16:9 format seems like a good idea but there should be an actual standard size so that not every manufacturer comes up with their own screen size like 15.4", 15.6", 17.3" etc.
