Intel posts $9.7 billion revenue for Q4, but earnings drop 39%

January 16th - Intel today posted its Q4 revenue of $9.7 billion. Q4 saw new records set for total microprocessor unit sales, along with server, mobile, and flash unit sales. Intel shipped over 70 million 65nm processors during 2006, and dual-core technology represented over 50 percent of Q4 shipments. Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini said, “Intel’s product and technology leadership yielded a strong fourth quarter with higher selling prices and record unit shipments in the fastest growing segments of the market.”

Despite that large number and some bullish talk by Paul Otellini, the fact is that the fourth quarter earnings plunged 39% year over year. Because of this shares of Intel fell $1.26, or 5.65 percent today to close at $21.04.

Intel chalked up the profit decline to write-downs in its flash memory division, startup charges for its new NAND flash unit which makes the memory chips used in portable electronic gadgets such as MP3 players and cell phones and costs associated with its transition to a more advanced manufacturing technology. Stiff competition with AMD and price wars also brought down revenues.

Intel expects their Q1 2007 revenue to be between $8.7 and $9.3 billion.

Seagate releases 2.5" 15,000RPM hard drive for servers

Seagate announced a new, faster class of 2.5" hard drives for servers, the Savvio 15K, which spins at 15,000RPM. Seagate is making an effort to get the industry to replace the 3.5" drives that currently dominate the server market. HP is a large proponent of the smaller 2.5" drives, as the company uses them in their ProLiant x86 servers.

In addition to taking up less room, the 2.5" 15,000RPM drives also consume around 30% less power than current 3.5" 15,000RPM drives. The Savvio 15K is only being shipped to computer manufacturers right now; it will announce a price later in Q1 when they will be sold to a larger market.

Those these drives are designed for servers and not notebooks, it is conceivable that this technology will filter down, especially given the fact the drive is 2.5" diameter.

I wonder if there is anything mechanically keeping people from using the server 2.5" HDs on normal notebooks. Anyone?

Wow, that Alienware is a beast. That is the SLi notebook gamers have been waiting for. A Core 2 and dual 7950GTX's? That's gonna blow some stuff away. It might also blow up from heat, but we'll wait for the reviews...

I think it's the Asus Z84Jp. Didn't know about the upgrade to the go 7950 GTX. That's what is really exciting to me.

I don't think it's an issue with mechanical, most likely heat, and server chassis tend to have plenty of room for getting the heat out faster. Having a 15K RPM drive in our notebooks under our palm rest probably isn't a good idea right now! :D

Hey, what's the Clevo equivalent for the Alien M5790 Edition? That mobility Radeon X1900 is sweet! Or is it some other manufacturer?

I was starting to wonder what the heck was taking them so long to come out with a SLI, Core 2 Duo notebook... Finally! :p

Since Dell owns Alienware, I would expect a new 17" XPS that perhaps takes advantage of SLI to come out some time...

15k 2.5" drives are insane! I have not read the article, but I assume these are SCSI drives? If that is the case, there is no way for them to be put in a notebook, because this requires a SCSI controller.

If this is true, I would have expected some extreme NBR folk to run tests with a 15k in their gaming notebooks...of course, hooked to lap-chill pads, etc. Haven't seen anything extreme like that yet.

Wow! A dual 7950GTX? That is just impossible, how are they going to do it with heat!?

Great to see a X1900 Alienware (actually precisely the same as the Xi 1554 from Fujitsu Siemens Computers). I can't wait for a review to see how the X1900 performs.

    Great article Chaz!

Yeah, I'm also waiting for performance specs of the x1900. I wonder if it will be closer to the 7900GS or the 7900GTX.

The Mobility X1900 should be closer to a 7900 GTX. It does appear to have the foundation to be faster than a 7900 GTX, but it depends on what core and memory clockspeeds ATI assignes to the card. We'll just have to wait and see.
