According to a DigiTimes report, HP plans to introduce a notebook featuring touch-screen technology by the end of this year.

Microsoft plans to add more extensive support for touch-screen technologies into Windows 7, which has increased notebook makers interest in the technology. At the moment, tablet PCs are one of the only segments using touch screens.

From the picture, the M6400 wins hands down in terms of looks compared to the W700, although they are not much different in terms of their prices =/.

Good to see AMD losing less. As to the M6400, it seems rather inordinately expensive. Granted it does have a lot of power, but $3800 as a starting price, even with that considered? The M2400 and M4400 seemed like fairly good deals, but I think the M6400 is Dell's profit-bringer. Although the non-Covet version isn't nearly as bad in that regard, it's still quite expensive.

Further news on the HP touch-screens will be interesting. I'm still undecided on whether I'd want a touch-screen notebook, though. It's a nice feature to have, but screen quality usually suffers (both initially and because of smudging).

Nobody I know has ever bought a Dell for it's listed price. Expect coupons and discounts to cut atleast 20% off it's listed price.

Yeah, the Covet is really a thing of beauty, they got it right. Then again, Dell has chosen not to ship it with a Blu-Ray drive, unlike Lenovo, and it also comparatively lacks the digitizer and the TrackPoint. I'm holding my breath (and my purchase) for a comparison of the screens.

One possible downside of the Covet finish - I'm guessing this may be delicate compared to the surprisingly tough ThinkPad finish, and how bummed will you be when you scratch it?

I also don't really see the allure of touch-screen laptops. At least with convertible tablets, I can hold it in my hands while surfing the web from the couch.

I do like the TX2000Z series from HP, but really wish they had Intel options and MUCH less grainy screens.

maybe in the future all laptops of all kinds will be tablets and convertibles so one can use them both ways.

I also cannot wait till HP offers ssd's in all their notebooks. I refuse to buy my next notebook without SSD, so I hope they jump on the bandwagon.

AMD is getting stronger in that they are going down the tubes less than they were before. >_> I'm sorry, but their processors still suck. I'd rather have an ATI/AMD GPU than an nVidia card at this point, but no, no AMD cpu/platform for me. Not when Intel is blowing it out of the water on all fronts.

Yes, I'm a big fan of ATI's current GPUs and are a very strong rival to Nvidia's offerings but of AMD's processors vs Intel, bleh.

But that's why AMD gobbled up ATI, to have at least one division in the company that can hold its own against its competitors. If they ever release the ATI XGP external graphics solution, I have a feeling it will boost sales of AMD Puma notebooks since its currently exclusive to work on the Puma platform and give them a strong selling point over Intel notebooks. That would really make me consider an AMD powered notebook as my next one. :)

Why? Then Intel will have no reason to innovate since there are no viable competitors in the market and it will lead to stagnation. You can hate AMD all you want, but without them Intel would not be where it is today and the prices would be insane.

HP Touchscreen Notebook: Let me guess.... It's going to be called the HP TouchSmart Notebook PC. Either way, I'm all for a touchscreen in a notebook that's bigger than 12.1".

Dell Precision M6400 Covet: A Precision that thinks it's an XPS, and it has every reason to think that way. It's got awesome performance along with hot looks that look far better than the XPS M1730. Go figure! Too bad it commands an ultra-high price tag....

This is excellent news for AMD. I really was fearful we would find ourselves with only one CPU supplier. This would not be good.

Good news for AMD, I want them to be even more competitive in the market with Intel especially in mobile chipset and platform so the users can get a laptop for a lot cheaper. Look at what is going on right now, GPU are cheaper compared to what you are getting as ATI is now being very competitive with NVIDIA so they have to compete by reducing the price.

amd chips aren't that bad, they are good performers in their respective price point.
it's just that their top chip is nowhere near intels offering, getting pwned by a q6600.

I don't think AMD can hold very long as Intel is coming out with new superior CPU every 3-4 months. Can't wait for iCore7 from Intel and the new 35W from mobiles.
