According to The Inquirer, Nvidia is making a die-shrunk version of its G80 for notebooks. The mobile card will probably be called the 8800M-GTX and will be based off the desktop 8800GT. It will be manufactured in the MXM form factor and will initially come to market with 512MB of dedicated memory; a 256MB version will follow. The TDP of the card is 35W, meaning the card is most likely downclocked and uses various power saving settings. Unfortunately, the card will only work for MXM Type III cards due to thermal restrictions. There is no word on how many shader units the card will have. This chip is intended to replace the current high-end GPU for notebooks, the Go7950GTX. The release date is supposed to be in the third week of November; expect to see it appear in high-end notebooks from Clevo, Dell, and Toshiba.

Alienware contest and launch event in New York November 19Alienware is running a contest on its site where you have to decode an Alien message. The interesting thing is the prize. You win a trip to New York City for a "Launch Event". Meaning something is coming soon. More interesting is that the rumored new Nvidia 8800M GTX graphics card is supposed to come out on the 19th (see the above news bit). Hmmm. No prizes to anyone that can guess what the launch might be for!

Pinnacle introduces PCTV HD Ultimate Stick
(view large image)Pinnacle has released their new PCTV HD Ultimate Stick, which comes in a USB form factor and allows users to tune into free over-the-air HDTV signals and watch them on their Windows computer. The best part is that no special software is needed; the Pinnacle TV Center Pro software is loaded on the device and it has enough flash memory to store two hours of standard definition (SD) TV. It takes coaxial, S-video, and composite video inputs.
The card retails for $130 and comes with an antenna and remote.

Microsoft posts strong quarterly sales and profit growthOn October 25 Microsoft reported strong sales and profit growth for this quarter, which came as a surprise to Wall Street analysts. While the company is trailing Google in the Internet services and online advertising markets, its Windows Vista operating system and Office 2007 are selling better than expected. Microsoft shares jumped 12 percent in after-hours trading to $35.76/share.
Microsoft gave three reasons for the strong results; the sales of personal computers going up worldwide 14 to 16 percent, increased sales of its premium-priced versions of Windows and Office, and its growing server software group, from which sales were up 16 percent.

Wow, 8800M GTX at last!
Too bad these can't fit in 15 inchers . . . -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Bah humbug! What happened to the 22W TDP!? I still have faith in a lower model in the c90.
-
Insider specs :
8800m GTX
TDP 35W
release date : when gilo has just bought a new gaming laptop .
-- Like we didn't know its going to happen . -
i wonder if my Sager np5791 can support the 8800M-GTX
-
Ouch that is going to hurt AMD, they loose money/profit again how clever of them to release 2700HD together with 8800m GTX.
-
i cant even begin to figure out what that alienware code says
-
In regards to the high-end 8 series:
MXM is backwards compatible, correct? Thus, MXM-III ought to fit into MXM-IV/HE, correct? -
I have no doubt that you will see a faster clocked version in the Clevo D901C and M570RU (the only notebooks with MXM-IV).
The 35W TDP just means that the card will need at least a MXM-III.
Its about time for us to see a high-end DX10 mobile card with a 256-bit mem-interface.... which would finally retire the 7950GTX after about a year of being king.
Note: the date of launch and shipping are greatly different, so I would not be surprised for the card to not ship out for purchase until January... even if it will be launched in November. -
It was pretty obvious that 90nm high end wouldn't quite cut it..
Would be interesting to see memory, rop, shader config of 8800M GTX.. -
awwwww and I was so looking forward for a 8800m card in a 15.4" notebook =(
-
There will surely be a G98 card for a 15.4 so sit tight there is more to come for us
-
It was pretty obvious that the NB8-E would be based on the G92 core. G80, with its massive heat output and power reqs, simply would not have cut it, even with heavy modifications. The 65nm G92 core should do fine - I want to see the benches of a D901C with a quad core Penryn chip and dual 8800GTX's.....

The news about the 8800GTX is way overdo. I'm glad to see Nvidia finally getting that thing to notebooks, but I hope in the future it doesn't take as long. It seemed like there was a lot of lag time between the desktop release and the mobile release this time around.
As for the Alienware thing, why would you even want to decipher that? They buy you airfare to NYC, set you up in a hotel, and invite you to a launch event? You get $1,000 but you'll end up spending a large chunk of that on food and transportation. It seems to me like you come away with very little. At the least I would have expected them to give away a new high-end laptop or something like that. It all just seems like a really stupid promotion to me.
Quanta makes the OLPC people sound like bandits. The OLPC project is definitely having major management problems it seems. They're obviously trying to ratchet up the scarcity of a product they think will be in demand in order to have it command a higher price. I think this all flies in the face of what their original mission statements and goals were. -
On another note.... my young sister and I just deciphered the Alienware message.
Hope we win the $2800 worth of stuff.
I'll give you guys some pics and stuff if we win. -
winning the alienware message thing is kinda pointless unless you desperately want to travel to NYC.
Its good that the 8800 gtx is going to be available in notebooks. Too bad it probably wont fit into 15.4' notebook. -
-
I read, it will be 3 versions of the new mobile video card 8800M GT, 8800M GTS and 8800M GTX. But if we compare with the last gen 7900 GS, 7900GTX and 7950GTX no one fit on a 15.4 laptop, so what really will happen about that? We need to wait and see...

Is any of the 8800M variants going to fit into a G1S-A1 ?
-
-
8800M -> MXMIII
Told you so.. -> some Asus C90 hopers. -
Is G1S-A1 MMX III ?
If so, it can only handle as much heat from a 25W video card ? -
Asus gaming notebooks are using MXM-II (capped at 25w TDP)
... so you guys still have to wait for another 8800M. -
Yea thought so, my 8600GT IDLES @ 68 Celsius, a 8800M is prolly gonna
IDLE @ 78 Celsius at least even if it will fit into a G1S-A1... -
