Gateway Releases New Retail Notebooks: 6010GZ, 3522GZ, 7426GX
I'm starting to lose track of what Gateway has released over the past few weeks, it seems like they've released a million notebooks. The problem is that they have different models availabe in retail stores versus what's on their website. Most of the new releases are upgrades to existing retail notebooks. For instance, the new 7426GX gaming/multimedia notebook is to replace the 7422GX currently sold in stores such as Best Buy.
Here's a rundown of these new retail notebooks that will be available at stores such as Best Buy and J&R
Gateway 6010GZ
(from press release) - The next-generation Gateway 6010GZ notebook leaps ahead of other widescreen displays in retail with a compelling combination of an Ultrabright 15.4-inch widescreen display, exceptionably mobile form factor and an unbeatable price. The new notebook's Ultrabright 15.4-inch widescreen display provides a visually stunning experience for viewing digital entertainment, web sites and DVD movies. Plus, the widescreen display provides 30 percent more horizontal space over a standard 15-inch display, making schoolwork, research on the Internet, and digital photography more engaging for students and families. Professionals will find it easier to review multiple information sources simultaneously and work on two pages or applications side by side.
Gateway 3522GZ
The new Gateway 3522GZ Notebook is available in retail stores but not online via Gateway.com
(from press release)- The Gateway 3522GZ notebook PC unites a thin-and-light design with a vibrant 14-inch widescreen display resulting in the compelling combination of maximum viewing in a highly portable form factor. While the widescreen display is great for entertainment, web site browsing and reviewing large spreadsheets, there is another benefit. The wider notebook size provides room for a full-sized keyboard, so the notebook is easier and more comfortable to use.

Gateway 7426GX
(from press release) - The 7426GX fuses 64-bit computing, dedicated graphics and an ultrabright display to provide desktop-class performance in a mobile form factor. The system features AMD's fastest mobile processor available on the market -- the AMD Athlon 64 3700+ -- to provide 64-bit processing for the hottest game titles, graphics-intense applications and digital media hobbies such video editing. Also, the Gateway 7426GX is ready to handle future generations of 64-bit capable software.

IBM and Sanyo Demo Prototype ThinkPad with Fuel Cell
Anyone sick of hearing about and seeingfuel cell battery prototypes and then never seeing such a product show up in retail stores? Well, add another prototype to the list. Although this one is a little different as the system is designed to be compatible with already sold ThinkPad designs. It seems that IBM would promote using a traditional battery in the UltraBay area and a fuel cell in the back of the notebook. Details are a little sketchy to be honest, and exactly what we're looking at in the image below is unclear to me. It seems that this is a ThinkPad in a recharging station for the fuel cell...we can only hope IBM wouldn't want us to lug around that mammoth size dock. I think that's the point though, if you're at your office it's no big deal to charge the fuel cell in this dock and then hit the road for 8 hours, but then if you need to charge via just regular AC adapter you still have the regular Lithium-Ion battery in the UltraBay so you can use that for power and easy charging. We'll see, I'm pessimistic about ever seeing a fuel cell long life battery in the five-years.

Intel Dual Core Processors Arriving This Month
The dual-core processor technology from Intel and AMD have been talked about and various release dates have been thrown around for some time now. Usually we expect delays on processor releases from Intel given their recent past history. But it seems as if this streak is broken. Intel will apparently soon launch a 65nm manufactured dual-core processor that runs at speeds of up to 3.4GHz and comes with 4MB L2 Cache. The announcement for this processor is expected in the next couple of weeks and availability will follow soon thereafter. A mobile version (Pentium M) of a dual-core processor will be available at the beginning of 2006, this processor is code-named "Yonah".

$100 Laptops?
I'm sure we'd all jump at the chance to pay $100 for a new laptop versus the expected $1,000 or more. But this $100 laptop is intended for 3rd world countries such as Cambodia. Nicholas Negroponte is the director of the MIT Multimedia Laboratory and is pushing the idea of equipping poor students in 3rd world countries with these really cheaply made notebooks to help in their education. The notebooks would run Linux and have a rear projected image display 12-inch screen to keep costs way down.
My question is, can we get clean water and sanitation to these kids before laptops? Priorities first, sheesh.

Cost breakdown of a $100 laptop for 3rd world country's students

100$ laptop???????? wow????
is it a DELL???
just joking...
I live in a 3rd world country named CANADA...and we as "poor" student should be allowed to benefit from this deal... -
you crazy Canadians don't need $100 laptops, you already have "free" healthcare. Besides, I'm not so sure this laptop would really thrill you even at $100.

what kind of deals can we look forward to with this coupon? Is it stackable with any of the % offs or anything? If I got a dell it'd be a 9300, so I don't know if the 750 off would benefit me compared to the 800 off that ends tomorrow.

It won't be stackable with the existing % offs, so if you're getting a good deal now with the %off and you know $750 won't help then don't wait...if you system is over $2000 I don't know how much this $750 off will help out if it negates a % off offer and Dell has not indicated what the non coupon offers will be tomorrow.

Unless I'm wrong, which I often am [ ], it sounds like this Dell coupon is great for those who want more of a middle of the road configuration, eg. something around $1500-1600. After the coupon, you're basically getting it for 50% off!

that 100 dollar laptop reminded me of the movie "The first $20 million"
any of you ever seen it?
basically, this group of engineers was given a task to develop a laptop that would cost $100 and still be profitable. pretty interesting actually. they eliminated everything, including the screen, eventually making it a hologram. instead of a mouse, they used a special glove that you could use to click on the icons in the hologram. it was pretty sweet, though unrealistic. still, watch it if you have time.

yeah, I almost pulled the trigger on a 9300 using the 33% off and 12% off on EPP -- nice system with the 4 year warranty for under 1900 -- not too bad. Except for the size and weight and battery life compared to the Asus Z71V... I can't have a 17", even if the price/performance is great.

You all know there was a 33% off EPP coupon released yesterday that will expire tomorrow night....right?
Saved me $400 (should have been $600 but I'd have to return this thing and re-order...what a waste of time) off my XPS2. Got it for $2220 now after all reductions and a MIR.
