A new Asus Eee PC competitor has emerged, the sub-$500 ECS G10IL. It features an HSDPA 7.2 datacard built in, along with a webcam, 3x USB 2.0, Ethernet, and a 56k modem. It is more than likely it has WiFi and Bluetooth built-in as well.

HP has been number one in the notebook market for the sixth quarter in a row now according to DisplaySearch. Thanks to its acquisitions of Gateway and Packard Bell, Acer took over second place from Dell, pushing the firm to third place. Acer and HP are growing quickly due to the increasing transition of consumers from desktops to notebooks.

DisplaySearch also found that the most popular panel size for notebooks was 15.4-inch.

    Intel Atom processor gets benchmarked
    [IMG]

Computer Base, a German website, has done the first benchmarks of the new Intel Atom CPU, also called "Silverthorne". The 1.6GHz Atom CPU is a bit faster than a 1.13GHZ Pentium III (Tualatin) but slower than a 900MHz Celeron M (Dothan) in SuperPi. However, SuperPi is not multithreaded and does not allow the Silverthorne to reach its full potential, as it is HyperThreaded.

The Atom CPU is based on 45nm technology and has extremely low thermal ratings, from 0.6 to 2.5 watts. They will be available in frequencies up to 1.8GHz in the first half of this year.

    ...Does Asus own ECS?

And I have to say...Those Silverthorne numbers, if correct, are NOT what I expected. I thought these things were supposed to offer performance similar to a mid level Dothan? A LOT of applications aren't multicore capable, so the 2nd core performance will get lost? Not sure. I think we'll have to wait for a full benchmark suite to call this one.

The pic of the ECS G10IL is the 11 inch version. There will also be a smaller 9 inch version. And it may look better (to you) but it may perform worse (no performance specs released).

It looks quite nice and I am really wondering what the specs will be to keep the price so low since other 11" notebooks start close to $2000.

But it looks like this will not come to North America so I really shouldn't be interested, would be nice if it came here.

Nice ECS. (Does Asus own ECS? I think not?)

ECS mostly does the OEM market. Wondering if they are making thier own product or selling them to be rebadged into other Brands.

Same hinge design as my XPS....would be nice to see a Dell UMPC since thier Axim line is now dead.

I expected more from Silverthorne though, being a EEE user myself, I was looking forward to the Silverthorne in the upcoming 8.9" EEE, or perhaps the ECS G10 if its available by then. Its a little dissapointing but we will have to see how much better it could stretch the battery life. I find the performance of the EEE perfectly usable for what it was intended to do...and I'm on XP.

There is actually a HT enabled SuperPi. They should know that. I used it all the time in my Northwood and Prescott abusing days.

The word you're looking for is actually sarcasm.

Anyhow, I'll withhold any judgment until this sees the light of day. Could just be vaporware.

Maybe. The wording might be more appropriate, but the technical definition of satire includes the use of sarcasm to 'expose' or point out something. I'm actually not sure. Hmmm, I might have to ask someone about that.
