Which laptops defined the industry and pushed along the evolution of the mobile computer? This article on MSN.com lists ten laptops that have appeared since the first laptop came out 26 years ago.
The first true laptop was the Epson HX-20 in 1981 - it weighed 3.5 pounds and lasted 50 hours on one charge of its nickel cadmium battery. It only had a tiny monochrome display that displayed four lines of text at a time.
A much more modern machine in the article is the Clevo D900K (called the WidowPC Sting 917X2 in the article) - it had an AMD Athlon X2 processor and a 256MB graphics card. When the D900K debuted in 2005, top-end laptops had at most 128MB of graphics RAM so it was certainly a big step forward. Read the article to find out more!

Logitech introduces new Alto notebook stands*Insert Logitech*
Logitech has introduced new Alto notebook stands, including the new Alto Connect and Alto Express which join the original Alto notebook stand introduced last year. Alto notebook stands improve comfort by raising the display to optimal viewing height and distance when placed on a desk.
All of the Alto notebook stands are easy to set up - the set up times for all three models are less than 30 seconds. The Alto notebook stands are not brand-specific and are compatible with just about any laptop.
Highlights of the new Alto Connect notebook stand include its powered 4-port USB hub. It also has a cable management system to reduce cable tangles.
The Alto Express is more fashion-oriented and is a simple one-piece design. It is lightweight and easy to travel with.
The Logitech Alto Connect is expected to be available in the US and Europe beginning in September with an MSRP of US$79.99, and the US$29.99 Alto Express is expected to be available in the US in July and August in Europe.

WTH is with a 19" laptop only getting an 8600 GS?
-
-
Yeah, I guess it's probably more of a media center.
-
LG is a very mainstream company and makes plenty of $, and can even be compared to Sony profit wise.
With a lot of space in a 19 inch laptop, I'm pretty sure LG could have done better with the laptop all together. Hopefully, there will be a better CPU option, as well as the GPU option that is coming out in July. -
The MacBook Pro is an excellent laptop, yes, but not significant enough to merit being on that list. The lack of a ThinkPad on that list is a glaring oversight.
-
Sweet... my D900K is on the list.
Although it is true that when I first built it.... this was the FIRST DUAL-CORE NOTEBOOK. -
intrestingly the dell E1720 though smaller in size would have no problem beating this machine given that the hdd space is the same along with procesors but intrestingly a smaller machine is ore powerful with the 8600M GT
-
WOW.. I couldn't believe that the first ever laptop made in 1981 has a battery life of 50 hours!! ... until I read it had an crappy screen which can only display 4 lines.. ofcourse. Very interesting post

Is Apple that innovative or the writer is biased towards it? There were 3 Apple laptops in that list and I can't believed that he judged Apple's Mac Book Pro as the PC killer!!!??? What statistics did she based that on? HP is the best selling laptop right now and not the Mac. How can that be a PC killer when sales wise is not even in the top 3 notebook sellers?
-
-
The exclusion of the Thinkpad makes that article bad. The bias towards Apple makes it horrible.
PC killer? Give me a break.
Not to include such laptops as (pick one) the E600, T23, T41, T60 is just flat out wrong.
Sorry, but that article should be removed from the front page. -

I like these points that are made (quoted from article)
"the MacBook Pro notebook became the first Apple PC to make the switch to Intel processors, and the first Apple notebook to run Windows."
"Shortly after Apple introduced the MacBook Pro, it introduced Boot Camp, an easy-to-use utility that lets users switch between Mac OS X and a Windows operating system."
"With the final barriers to running Windows apps on a Mac falling, will Apple at last win the converts it needs to give Microsoft a serious run for its money?"
This is forgetting the fact that to utilize bootcamp and run Windows programs on a Mac, you need a copy of Windows, which Apple doen't provide. So Microsoft still make money selling full copies of retail versions of XP and Vista. -
Which makes the MBP mutually beneficial to Apple and MS. Actually, all of the intel macs are mutually beneficial: Apple can crow about its rising market share and its beautiful OS, while its users silently buy Windows to appease the pain and suffering of having to use Mac
-
seriously, the MacBook and MacBook Pro represent the best of both worlds. The ability to use the most advanced operating system in the world (Mac OS X) and the ability to run the occasional program once in a while under Windows with 100% compatibility. Owning a Mac is the only legal way of doing this. You get all this in some of the best designed computers in the industry.
-
No one's saying it's not a great laptop, because it is. What they're saying is, it shouldn't be in that list.
-
I just don't think the MBP is revolutionary enough to make that list, while there are a number of others (ThinkPad X30 especially) that are.
