After much speculation and plenty of leaked information on the web, Toshiba today announced the expansion of the Qosmio line of multimedia and gaming notebooks. The new Qosmio G55, Qosmio X305 and Qosmio F55 offer unique styling and some impressive features. Let's take a quick look.
Toshiba Qosmio G55
The Qosmio G55 is the first laptop to incorporate a "parallel media co-processor" (the Cell processor co-developed by Toshiba, Sony and IBM for the PlayStation 3). This time Toshiba is calling it the "Toshiba Quad Core HD Processor", but the bottom line for consumers is that you get greater speed for multimedia tasks like transcoding video. The Qosmio G55 also features up to 500GB of hard drive storage space, and is the first laptop from Toshiba to include an 18.4-inch diagonal widescreen TruBrite (glossy) high-definition display. The primary benefit of the 18.4" display over the traditional 17.1" displays is that the new, larger LCD natively supports the true 16:9 image ratio used for widescreen HD movies.

Toshiba's Qosmio X305 is an impressive gaming system with a traditional 17.1-inch diagonal widescreen TruBrite high-definition display. The X305 continues the legacy of the much-loved X205 and is packed with NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX dedicated graphics with up to 1GB VRAM graphics memory, dual hard drives with up to 400GB of total storage space, as well as DDR3 system RAM.

(view large image)Of course, the nice feature set creates a great gaming machine but the other big news here is the redesign of the Qosmio brand chassis and the unique "red-flamed Rogue" design and Fusion finish used on the new X305. This certainly doesn't look like a boring old notebook.
Toshiba Qosmio F55
For those of you who don't want a massive 17-inch or 18-inch desktop replacement notebook, the Qosmio F55 with its 15.4-inch widescreen TruBrite display is a welcome addition to the Qosmio family. The F55 offers both mobility and solid gaming performance thanks to NVIDIA GeForce 9700 GTS dedicated graphics. The other item of note with the F55 is that the laptop features a built-in GPS receiver and Garmin mapping software. The Qosmio F55 doesn't require an internet connect to help you find your way since the built-in GPS system instantly provides your exact location and turn-by-turn directions to your destination.

(view large image)Overall, the new Qosmio notebooks also feature "REGZA LINK HDMI" technology that lets you control and REGZA LINK enabled devices, such as Toshiba's REGZA HDTVs and the Qosmio laptop with a single remote.
Each new Qosmio model will be available later this summer at retail stores nationwide in the US and available directly from Toshiba at www.toshibadirect.com. Additional information is available at the Toshiba website.

they are some funky laptops.. the X305 is huge however in hight.. and looks like it only has a single 9800 GTX...
looking forward to benchmarks
i wonder if the addition of a cellprocessor can help gaming performance...or only films ? -
boring notebooks
-
Wow. The Qosmio's have always been beautiful notebooks, but these take it to a whole new level.
The G55 is making me drool, but I'd probably have to get a second job to afford it. -
that F55 is nice i think but knowing Toshiba these notebooks will have a not so nice price tag!
-
The G55 is going to be crazy. The X305 is a freakin' gamer's dream. The F55 is portable but also fast as hell. Toshiba is heading in the right direction.
-
These notebooks sure are different.... The X305 goes a little overboard with the styling though, IMO. The G55 and the F55 look pretty nice, though.
I'd like to see a review and some benchmarks on the F55 to see how it stacks up to other 15.4" notebooks. -

Those are some great-looking designs, extremely sleek. I personally wouldn't want a laptop as flashy as the X305 - all of them are too flash for me, really. The previous-gen X205 was about as flashy of a laptop as I'd buy.
The 9800M-GTX should have similar performance to the 8800M-GTX, considering they are both based on the G92 core. -
Anyone knows what to expect from the 9700m gts? Since the 9650m gs was the 9000 series name for the 8700m gt it should be a more powerfull card.
Maybe a laptop version of the 9600gt? -
I like the GPS feature in F55.
-
the 9800m GTX is not even a dieshrink now is it.. just a simple overclock +512 and rebrand?
-
Oouuuuh shiny...
Benchmarks should be very interesting. I wonder if those new 16:9 screens will be a big hit. Sure they are great for multimedia purposes but 16:10 was as rectangular a computer screen could get for me. -
drools over everything...this is gonna be hella pricy
-
WSXGA, how disappointing!
-
agree,it should have WUXGA !
-
Nice features. Terrible designs(glossiness doesn't help either).
-
*side picture of the x305 should be here*
... REALLY?
1.For a 17" laptop, thats an AWFUL lot of wasted space for aesthetics.
2.Those are hideous aesthetics by any standard.
I though the original Toshiba X200 was ugly with its woodgrain paint job, but this is by far the ugliest laptop i have ever seen. It makes the skullcap Alienware's look subtle.
edit-huh... cant get the picture to show. Its the side shot of the X305, in all its angled pinkish-red glory... -
power-brick anyone?

That X305 is hideous. Is Toshiba trying to compete with Dell and Alienware to sell the ugliest gaming notebooks? I'd much rather have the styling on the other two systems. I'm also disappointed that the graphics options aren't SLi or multi-core. ATi seems to be pulling ahead of Nvidia in that department, so incremental upgrades are not cutting it anymore. This is the single thing that makes me feel rather underwhelmed by the announcement of these notebooks coming soon.
Now for the cell processor being in a notebook, what kind of instruction set are we looking at for that? Hopefully it'll be no different from running an AMD or Intel. I think it would be extremely stupid of Toshiba to pull an Apple on us and further segment software based on if it runs on one CPU or another. -
Horrible looks, a price tag most probably in the astronomical range No ETA either, no doubt it will be in the way late summer
-
HOLY CRAP!!!!
The Toshiba X305 is frikkin ugly..
Im looking forward to the F55 -
WOoW 9800mGTX...it should be...what like (2*8800mGTX)
Nice laptops....and for all people saying they look ugly....YOU dont HAVE to BUY it!!!
And KUDOS for acer because they were the first to introduce the 16:9 laptops
Now other manufacuturers are doing the same...
Now im really confused....what should my next lappy be?!!

I like the F55. Looks pretty good and packed with a string of rather cool features.
The G55 is looking pretty neat as well.
The X305, looks great performance wise, but hideous in looks (in pictures at least)
Mostly, I'm just curious about the price of these notebooks.
If the Toshiba can keep the F55 to below $2,000 with a decent list of specs, they may very well have a winner. -
Anyone comment on the general build quality of Toshiba laptops and if they can be downgraded to XP--problems finding drivers? The G55 sounds interesting, would like to get full review of video editing/rendering/3d modeling capabilities.
-
people are predicting 10-20% performance increase... nothing revolutionary -

shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
Yeah, the x305 is UGLY! I don't care what that thing pulls in for performance, I wouldn't want a notebook that looks like it has kiddie water wings on it! lol

Maybe the x305 was designed by committee, which would account for its ugly looks.
-
Pardon me for being a dweeb (old-school, I like to think ), but what is with the trend in over-tarted notebooks? Is everyone taking design cues from Liberace's ghost?
-
-
Funky-looking. Gimme a ThinkPad any day.
Oh, or an HP 8510. -
Simple Buisness Designs FTW!!!!
I like nbs that are sleep and sharp. -
Sure would be neat to have that co-processor doing some folding while it's not being utilized for video purposes.
-
Some informations about pricing... can't wait to see how's the F55 doing!!
Toshiba decided to divvy up its Qosmio line into three very different machines, with starting prices way below the $3,000 that Qosmios previously cost.
• The 15.4" F55, with starting price at $1,150, will include built-in GPS—with Garmin navigation and mapping software—while its $1,750 configuration will have some reasonably decent gaming capability as well.
• The already leaked (and leaked) 18.4" monster G55 includes gesture-based controls—hand gestures in front of the camera—enabled by the Cell chip found in PS3s. This secondary processor also helps transcoding HD video and face tracking while editing video. It is priced from $1,300 to $1,550.
• Toshiba has officially rolled its gaming systems into the Qosmio brand, starting with the X305 (which you may have seen). The 17" gaming notebook will cost anywhere from $1,550 (in retail configs) to $3,500 with overclocked Core 2 Extreme processor, WSXGA resolution screen and two 7200-rpm drives.

Nice find. Those prices are actually relatively decent. Particularly the F55 and G55.
-

You know what i mean! -
The X305 looks like a baby toy. Seriousely cool look, but way too pink and stuff.
