Argh. This always happens. If they had released the 15" variety 3 months earlier, I would almost certainly have bought it. I like the HP dv6 I have now, but that Samsung is almost a pound lighter and has a native resolution more suited to the form factor than FHD. Oh well, there's always something just around the corner...
-
Not sure why the 14in starts at a higher price vs the 15in model which comes with quad core standard. I did sort of have my eye on the Series 4, but if the screen quality is good, i.e. good angles and color, the 14in could be my next laptop.
-
This is the laptop to beat. Design, power, pricing, and even a quality badge? Comes in at 24mm, thinner than a MBP. $999? 1600x900? Oh Samsung you.
-
I'm liking how these frameless screens can fit in smaller notebooks but I think it'd be best if they'd take a glass-half-full approach and describe them as smaller notebooks with larger screens rather than the other way around.
Chassis size is what limits hardware and it'd be unfair to compare the hardware inside of a notebook with a borderless screen to those of what's really a larger notebook with an equal size standard screen. -
Actually the ideal config is about $1149, not quite $999. But everything about the $150 upgrade is worth it. But the jump to $1299? I'm not so sure. There has to be something I'm missing -- $150 for 2 GB of RAM is a bit odd.

WHOA that $1150 15" looks like a bargin... heres to hoping they get good reviews!
-
i think this....is the laptop i have been waiting for. is there anything bad about it? was gonna get the lenovo y series but this seems a lot better
-
Darn the notebook industry... there's always something better coming out in a few months Luckily, I'm not particularly interested in AMD graphics and only i5 dual core in a 14" notebook. But it is actually a good price if the screen is decent (1600x900 base is intriguing).
-
How's the 6490 looking? Does it compare favourably with the 540M found in 13 inch notebooks?
-
wow, looks great..
between this and the new Vaio S 15", not sure which to choose when looking for a PC equivalent to the MBP 15" -
540m is a much stronger card, you can compare it to 6750M in the better model of the Samsung.
-
^ That's not true at all. The 540m is dead middle between the 6490m and 6750m.
Vaio is a swing and a miss, sorry. -
Cedric asked if 540 was similar to 6490M and I meant that 540 and 6750 are in a differnt class, comparable to each other.
I look at game usage and Bad company 2 and Starcradt 2 will both play at mid 30s with 6750 pushing a bit forward.
But the 6490 will have to play at Mid settings. -
The Samsung Series 7 is superior to the Vaio S 15" on paper...but there aren't many reviews out on the Series 7. Based on the reviews I've seen so far on the Vaio S 15", it has a good screen, poor speakers, and a somewhat-flexible case and keyboard. The touchpad feels good except for the multitouch features, which don't work well. It's remarkably light--more than a pound lighter than the MBP 15. Battery life is moderate with the standard battery, but amazing with a sheet battery that attaches to the bottom (a claimed 13 hours).
Unlike Bill Nye, I wouldn't write off the Vaio S 15". I think it's a respectable option so long as you know it's strengths and weaknesses. But given how promising the Series 7 looks on paper, I'd hold off for a little bit to see how it holds up in serious reviews. -
So I take it the 6490 is more inline with the 520M then? Notebookcheck has the 520M at performing -5% compared with the 6490? -
You know what's funny? I would've never bought the RF411 if they released this 2-3 months ago. Heck, I'm almost tempted enough to pick this up despite Ivy Bridge being avialable half a year from now.
-
No, the 6490m is a healthy step above the 520m.
-
Can anyone else figure out where the speakers are on the Series 7?
-
I would seriously buy the top $1200 model. Totally worth it seeing that a 15'' MBP starts at $1800...
Gah technology moves so fast.. -
Dang, this is exactly what I was looking for last month. I just received the dv6tqe a few days ago. I'm about to send it in for repairs but I may just ask for a refund. October 2 seems so far away, though, and there's obviously no reviews for it or in-depth previews (particularly the screen, cooling/noise).
What to do, what to do... my XPS m1530 still works fine and I can use that for a month before checking out the Samsung, I guess... -
That said, I'm liking the Vaio S quite a bit, too. So I'll be looking forward to a full review for the Series 7 as well.

It looks to be to the front, underneath the left palm rest. -
From what I can speculate on reviews so far..
Sony VAIO SE Pros:
- full 1080p screen, top-notch viewing angles+contrast
- blu-ray player for those who enjoy to watch perfectly sharp movs on their laptop.
- 8GB of RAM available
- available in a large variety of colors (like it or not, girls dig that kinda thing)
Samsung Series 7 (15") Pros:
- matte screen
- smaller footprint + lighter
- superior GPU (6750m pounces all over the 6630m)
- integrated flash memory for fast bootup
- more sturdy construction
All in all, Samsung Series 7 is made for the PC gamer who's looking for great portability while VAIO SE is more multimedia oriented. I'd personally pick the Series 7, but hey, don't see how the VAIO SE won't sell because of the Series 7. -
Where's the VGA port on that Samsung?
-
-
-
Doubt it. Actual metal is used. I don't think weight is a problem for anyone (unless it's kinda extreme); size is the deciding factor.
The MBP isn't a light machine by any standard. The HP DV6t has like a 40% larger footprint but weighs just 5% more. -
Some sites list the 15" Series 7 weight as 5.05lbs. Not too bad, but heavier than the SE
-
Also, is it just me, or have Samsung created the "The World's Second True Gaming Laptop"?
In fact, it's probably a better performer. The 6750m is at least as good as a gimped 555m, and it's a quad core to boot... and almost a third of the price. Step aside Razer. -

Looks like a glossy display on the 17in, no? Cause that be a shame since the other series 7 models come with a matte display.
-
@Mitlov: Unless I'm missing something, the size alone makes it just like any other gaming laptop out there. How thick is it?
In any case, I just realized that given their release dates, Samsung is actually releasing The World's First True Gaming Laptop, ousting Razer by a few weeks. -
-
Tapering hides size, especially in photos... from an angle like that. Waiting for a profile view.
-
-
-
-
-
-
How many at an inch thick though?
This and the MBP. That's pretty much it. And Razer. -
-
When were Macs ever in the discussion for anything though? They're an entirely "different breed" of machine.
Dell called the 15z the "thinnest PC in the universe" or something to that effect. Razer's nomenclature isn't that far off. However, Samsung looks like it'll hit the shelves before Razer though. -
Anyway, I'm unconvinced that Razer will have the QC necessarily to come out with a decent laptop, even if the specs would otherwise be great for gaming (which they're not imo). Love their mice and pads, but I've yet to buy one that worked the first time around.
For the Samsung 7...why would they release a thin laptop like this and not include a full SSD option? Plus, why plastic? Aluminum would be okay. Even some sort of magnesium composite or titanium would be okay. But plastic?
Like the minimalist look though (esp. compared to that Alienware---ugh). -
Not sure what QC stands for there; quite a few acronyms make sense. Quad core?
I think the HDDs are replaceable anyway. Samsung never had a history of offering CTO models; I guess they figure they wouldn't get enough people to bite. -
-
Samsung has really stepped it up to be the notebook manufacturer to watch. They've put together a seriously legitimate enthusiast gaming notebook whereas all but a couple of companies won't bother trying to cool anything hotter than a GT 560M. -
Plastic is underrated anyway. Plastic casing can be plenty solid and durable if made right, is light weight, and lets you save your money for faster internal components. -
It's not thinner than a MBP either.
