    Awesome!

This looks like an exact copy of the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro...

I don't know what the correct term is... maybe "rebranding"?

It's just a rebranded Clevo or MSi laptop, but a higher price tag for some trivial additions. So, probably not.

Anandtech did a nice review but NotebookCheck was kinda meh. Basically listed the specs. Hope to see a real review of the Evo15-S. I know the chassis comes from the GS60 Stealth but a review can make a difference when deciding for me that is.

The real question is whether Origin made any adjustments to the MSI version. I assume they have. I should find out shortly.

I'm hoping they did make some changes and for the better and hope you get yours soon.

This is probably a long shot but if the new Maxwell is released next month or sometime before the end of the year. I hope custom shops like Origin and OEMs will have the option to get the new Maxwells. Would hate to have to wait a year for new models to take advantage of the new Maxwells.

Also is the 3K display glossy only? Is there option for matte?

Sorry guys, I just cancelled my order. The 970 is on the cusp of getting announced (next week) and is expected to be included in laptops in October. I'm hoping Origin starts using the 970 for this as it would fix the one nagging issue; heat.

But why go with Origin? All you get it the same exact laptop, with worse keyboard lighting (only one color) and a much worse warranty (MSI branded version comes with 1 year of accidental, Origin does not).

You lose greatly. Oh and you pay more money for less.

So the reason I wanted it was the thin factor, 3K display and the GTX 870M. I got curious since they launched that Origin Alienware trade up program where you would trade in your Alienware notebook and they give you store credit to buy the new EVO 15-S or any other EVO system. My specs on my Alienware 14 is an i7 4930MX CPU, NVIDIA GTX 765M, 1080P AUO AVHA matte (form of IPS) screen. I took out the original LG 1080P IPS screen and i7 4700MQ CPU to upgrade to the better screen (the ones used in the T440S touch panel notebooks) and i7 4930MX CPU.

After reading the review on the 3K screen on the MSI Ghost (I'm assuming it will be the same screen used in the EVO 15-S), it seems that it won't be as accurate in color (even after calibration) than my calibrated Alienware 14 screen now. Also I heard the screen is glossy which not a big fan of. Also one thing I like about the Alienware system laptops is that I can use HWINFO fan control to set the speed of the fans manually or create a custom fan profile. Not too sure if I will be able to do that with the EVO-15S.

Do you guys think it would be worth trading my Alienware 14 system for the EVO-15S?

No, because the GS60 w/ 870M runs ridiculously hot. At this point in the game, you should be waiting for this to come out.

The 970M will be way faster, while not running nearly as hot.

I'm quite saddened by the fact that I can't find a single review for this line. Any information that's been helpful to me has come from its twin brother from another mother, the MSI GS60 Ghost. Pretty sure the chassis is from MSI, anyway.

That's not to say that I'm not currently very excited for the arrival of my purchase, however. In all honesty, the financing option played a huge part in the reasons why I bought this machine. The MSI G60 Ghost just happened to be my second choice among "ultraportable" gaming rigs--first choice being the RAZER Blade 14"--both of which I couldn't finance. Without the option to finance, I somehow managed to find this gem as well as a website that could accept my low-but-up-and-coming credit score.

Having grown accustomed to using my girlfriend's Macbook Pro, I no longer wanted to deal with bulky portable workstations. I swear, that thing has fallen off of her bed at least 50 times in the past 9 months and it doesn't have a single scratch or scar to show for it. The RAZER Blade 14" was ideal, having virtually the same look and exterior design as the Macbook Pro, but my damn credit score said no. The EVO15-S made me quick to change my mind about saving my money and going another six months with my 2012 HP Pavilion m6 1035dx, which is falling a part and overheats as often as I eat fast food (which is a lot).

I know it's not the most customizable machine out there, and people have had reasons to complain about it in the only other thread in this forum (*ahem* RAID), but the looks and specs are right up my alley. I'm looking forward to writing possibly the first review about it when it arrives early October and maybe giving the little guy a little more hype.

I would just forget about it now and cancel the order and wait for the new GPUs to arrive.

aside that, it doesn't really matter its the same damn thing as the GS60

Wow. This guy just quoted nearly my entire post in the OriginPC forums: Can't Find Anything on the EVO15-S. Thanks for the credit.

I've updated that post in the thread and did opt out of buying the 870m. I was really pissed off when I saw that the 970m was available in the system I ordered the day before it was supposed to ship out with the 870m. So I cancelled my order and completely replaced it. I don't know how, but I managed to get the 970m with a free two-year warranty. As a result, I didn't have to pay any additional cost for the upgraded GPU, but actually got some money back as a result. It's been a little over a week since I re-ordered and the estimated shipping date is the 30th.

To date, I've searched the web for hours just to read a review of this thing and there's still no sign of one. Again, I'm definitely gonna be reviewing this thing when I get it, but here's what I know:

Having spoken to service reps at OriginPC, I was told that they build the laptops themselves. So in case you want something other than red LED's in your keyboard, you could request a different color. I also just asked my account manager over at OriginPC if they could apply a thermal paste of my choosing. Will be reposting here when I get a response.

In regards to the keyboard vs the MSI GS60 Steelseries, a customer rep informed me that the backlit keyboard will be customizeable at some point. Also not sure if it's true, but crossing my fingers for similar functions to the Steelseries that the MSI GS60 ships with.

At this time, OriginPC only ships the 6gb 970m with the FHD display-- NOT 3k. In this youtube video and on their Facebook page, they do state that the option for a 4k display will be available. For people who want the FHD display with the 6gb 970m, OriginPC is a place to look. I honestly still don't understand why people would opt for the 3k when 1) even the 970m will have uncomfortable temperatures powering the screen and 2) 4k isn't too far off.

For those interested in this laptop, use the MSI GS60 as a reference until someone actually receives the EVO15-S. Until then, I'll keep the progress updated here.

The problem with OriginPC is its more expensive than the MSI GS60 and not highly known with hardly any to none good reviews of them. OriginPC should send a laptop to get reviewed by HTWingNut here and maybe it will help their cause. Plus, they don't have many options compared to other resellers when ordering extra stuff, EG: IC Diamond paste, extra power adapter, and Killer wifi.

I was actually thinking of ordering the 870m version back in the days but decided against it once I read about the 900m release within months. Glad I didn't. I hope OriginPC has more people buying from them so we can see actually reviews compared to the typical crap basic letting us know that a company just released new product.

Welp, the Evo15-S now comes with 4k. Too bad it's a glossy display. Looking at the current configuration options, they've very recently gotten rid of the options for a 3k display and the 870m. Before you couldn't get the 970m + 3k without probably special ordering it.

Click and scroll down to tech specs.

If the Razer Blade wasn't thoroughly beat before, it is now.

I've had my eye on the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro and a few other slim options, but Origin has my attention now. My only question though is what, if any, changes they've made. Better cooling, more copper, etc.. I just don't know. I really wanted a 6GB version of the 970m. I know MSI has the 064 version, but I think the display that comes with that option is TN and not IPS, am I wrong? Origin also has seriously good build quality.

Any thoughts now that Origin is offering a few options?

I actually got the Evo15-S last week and it really doesn't seem all-that different from the MSI GS60 Ghost.

The display is awesome. They describe it as an "eDP Widescreen Display." Whatever. It looks like an IPS panel to me, and with the LCD calibration, this thing rocks.

It's as loud as the MSI GS60 is described, even at idle; it looks almost exactly the same, too. Contrary to the GS60 Ghost, though, the magnesium alloy is not brushed. It's solid, but not anodized. It's also quite the fingerprint magnet, but that's to be expected.

The keyboard is also great to type on, but it lacks the Steelseries software that makes it multi-backlit. It's still programmable, though.

The power button changes color from blue to orange when the CPU and GPU are being optimized accordingly.

The bezel around the screen itself isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Doesn't look nearly as bad in person as it does in pictures. I actually kind of like it.

    Powerbrick is still huge.

Connection ports are exactly the same.

The only things you might find different between the MSI GS60 Ghost and the OriginPC Evo15-S are in the interior hardware and bundled software. OriginPC receives the barebones from MSI and that's it. Everything else they put in themselves. I don't know if they're the exact same components that MSI chooses to use in their Ghost series, but the GPU and CPU are--at the very least--the same.

Between ordering these systems from either MSI or OriginPC, customer service may play a big part in what you go with. I went with OriginPC for that. It also helped knowing that a lot of people trust their engineers since these things don't just come pre-built. You could ask their support anything. From the individual parts they use in the systems, to special-ordering peripherals, to asking why they choose to use Arctic Silver 5 instead of IC Diamond--their support is top-notch.

They also offer a 4k display with the system, but I definitely wouldn't recommend using that if you plan on doing some heavy gaming. Although the laptop runs relatively cool with a cooling pad underneath, having four times more pixels to power would just make it run that much hotter. The 1080p display is gorgeous. Just stick with that.

A review is sure to come within the next few weeks. I'm no expert with computers, though, but I figure I might as well contribute since there are people curious about this system and there's virtually no information about it on the web.

Man, thank you sooooo much for this info! I've been beating my head against a wall trying to decide on a new system. For shorter gaming sessions, have you been able to keep the Evo on your lap? How about for web surfing, etc? My desktop is going to remain my gaming rig, but wanted something respectable for the our family room and trips. How's the fan sound?

I've been able to play DmC: Devil May Cry on Ultra at 1080p pretty comfortably. GPU temperatures never exceeded 65 degrees Celsius after roughly half an hour of playing. At the same time I'm running ~30 tabs in Chrome and have five or six other applications open. My ambient temperature is something like ~20 degrees Celsius, though. The bottom is the only part that felt like it was running hot. The surface stays relatively cool if not comfortably warm.

With newer and more taxing games (DmC is only about a year old) I imagine temperatures could get up to the high 70's, at which point I'd say that it would be uncomfortable to use on my lap. In that situation, you could just use a cooling pad with it and you should be fine. If you don't like using cooling pads, I recommend using something like this. Although the Evo15-S is advertised as a mainstream 15.6-inch notebook, it won't fit most cooling pads or lap tables advertised to fit 15-inch laptops. That's why I linked the 17-inch Grifiti Deck. The thing works great.

As for the sound of the fans, in a silent room they're quite audible even at idle. However, playing games with sound coming from either the speakers or headphones, I don't hear them at all. I don't find it at all necessary for them to run so fast at idle, though, so I may attempt to tinker with the settings in the BIOS.

Feel free to ask any questions and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

Any more gaming updates? Do you play modded Skyrim? Love the style of this rig but am worried the 970m won't keep up.

I'm still on the fence. I had actually gone ahead with another brand, Asus G751, but sent it back.

    @HoldPunchJim,

You got the 970m version correct? I'm guessing yes since your temp is very good. When did you order this if you don't mind saying.
