The i5 560UM sounds very interesting... a mix of performance and low power draw?
-
I just hope the new quad cores don't show up in the wild for another 2+ months...then I won't feel so much instantaneous obsolescence with my not-quite-here-yet new laptop.

I'm really digging the 640 dual core. Thats pretty nice preformance for its TDP.
THough who can argue about the 940 quad... its just pretty -
I wanted the i7-640m to get an x or a k added to it's model number.
-
not worth it. 32nm sandy bridge is only a few months after the release of these processors.
a 10% jump in clock speed is insulting really. -
Faster CPUs just means more money for Intel. 95% of users don't need anything more than their cheapest CPU.
-
Great for gamers. For business and daily use, looking forward to Intel SSDs with better performance and dramatically lower cost per GB. Hopefully the recent headlines news pre-announcing this are true. I love my new Core i5 notebook, but 99% of the time: it's I/O bound.
-
Even gamers won't see a difference in CPU power considering the differences between the new CPUs are only a few hundred MHz increase at most.
-
I think they should just dumb dual-core entirely and start focusing on making quad-core cheaper. They're doing away with dual-core already for their desktop CPUs, they should start doing the same thing for mobile CPUs.

The new ULV cpu's look very promising. This way you can have long battery life, and still very good performance when you need it.
I even makes me forget about Sandy Bridge (for portable 13 inch laptops) since these new cpu's are perfect for both gaming (power), an study (batterylife for attending class) needs.
The normally volted core i7 cpu's do seem to be a bit of a dissapointment. Ok, you won't have to pay an additional 400-500€ for a 1.73ghz clocked corei7 when putting together a laptop at AW, kobalt, etc, but this low clock difference will be barely noticable for gamers. So perhaps it will be better to wait for SB afterall when looking to assemble a powerfull €2000 system to last you 3+ years. -

It's still on 32nm.

Also, SB is slated for release Q4 2010. But with these latest processors coming out mid-to-late summer, plus the fact that the desktop SB is also slated for the same quarter, I'd bet the mobile SB won't be out until the very end of 2010. If you consider 4-5 months to be "a few", then just about every computer advancement will be merely a few months away (as I joked above), and thus you will always have some reason to wait. I think it's smart to look ahead and decide if you can wait for the next best thing, but if someone is in the market for a gaming laptop now (which was your example) it would be reasonable to wait for the 480M GPU, but waiting for SB means you are going to be lucky to get it by Xmas.
