Editor's Note
Of course, the big news with the introduction of the V1010 is that both Fujitsu and Sony (with the recent announcement of the Sony VAIO NR) are chasing the more budget-focused customers. Could it be that more notebook manufacturers are finally seeing the value in low-priced notebooks (and low-priced notebook buyers)?

No firewire, no vista premium. Hey, at least it'll be reliable.

I wish Fujitsu did their budget models in a 14" widescreen, 5.5lb form factor so that I could at least think about getting one. The Fujitsu S series is too expensive, and their budget models are really big and heavy...

this is awesome, now i have even more choices-this could be a good or a bad thing!

How reliable is it when compared to a ThinkPad such as T61?

XP Pro FTW! But what's up with these "Pentium Dual-Core" processors? Sounds like a low end version of the original Core Duo processor (Not the Core 2 Duo).
And I also see that it lacks Santa Rosa. (Intel GMA 950 gives it away). Boo. But if you're on a budget, this maybe one of the cheapest options for an XP-based machine. And I'm a bit skeptical of a 40wH battery; then again, this is a pretty low-powered machine. At least it has a 120Gb HD--which is 20Gb bigger than what's in my machine! (But it's slower too--5400 vs. 7200 RPM). -

A new model on the old Napa/Yonah/GMA 950 platform? I don't see why, since there are budget Santa Rosa chips now. Sony's finally moving off of that with their NR series replacing the old N series. Even budget buyers deserve 64-bit and x3100.

how the hell is this a good bargain computer? my friend just bought a acer 5570Z notebook with the 1.73ghz t2080, 2gb, 160gb, built in graphics, dvd burner, 6 cell battery lasting about 3 hours
$599 at best buy, although it was on sale - but still $699 normally
thats $100 cheaper for more ram, and more hard drive space and the speed difference won't be noticible at all.... -
Uhh, thats an Acer my friend. They were talking about not sacrificing quality for a low price...
Personally, I would take an NR over this. Its nicer looking, and most of the components are shared with the FZ, other than casing and dedicated graphics option. -

Europe has has the Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo budget notebook range for a while. I think they are aimed at the home users. The V1010 may be aimed at business (XP Pro + GMA 950).
In Europe, Samsung is actively targeting the budget end of the business sector. The latest arrivals are the P400 and P500 which are simple reworks of the R20 and R60+ with matte instead of glossy finish (display and cover) plus XP Pro.
All the indicators point towards notebooks continuing to take an increasing share of the computer market.

still though, i know its acer, but its not like the laptop will die in 1 year simply because of the brand name, its all how you keep up the laptop.
i would go with less quality build laptop (which i personally think theres no problems with the quality on the acer laptop besides the flex in the screen) with much better specs and cheaper then a bit more quality laptop that cost more and slower....
but perhaps because i get a new laptop every year, i dont experience any problems.... -
As for my HP laptop, it started crapping out after the warranty expired. -
Speaking of Thinkpad, for 800, I would be taking a very close look at Lenovo Outlet as there are plenty of T60 and T61 deals always popping up with much much better specs than this Fujitsu.
