The team over at Engadget have managed to spy some first look images of the new Dell XPS M1730 on another website ... and it looks like Dell is taking the XPS designs to the next level (for better or worse). Dell will likely offer the 17-inch M1730 with a variety of Santa Rosa processors or even the new Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 processor. The M1730 will be available with up to 4GB of system RAM and either an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS card (256MB) or a GeForce 8700M GT (512MB) for superior gaming performance. The rumored launch date for the M1730 is August 27th, and we will keep you posted as more information becomes available.

Seriously, the M1710 looks much better than that if that's the real design. Is the XPS M1330 really a one-hit wonder?

Will it still have the glowy light show the past big XPS systems had?

That's it, the design of the M1330 is very nice. They took their time with it. I was thinking the M1730 would look like a bigger version of the 1330, not just an inspiron chassis with different colors.

It looks like it has a little LCD readout panel just above the keyboard on the right. Sweetness cubed!

Unfortunately it looks like a poorly-designed tortishell suticase.... Which is lame becasue I was really looking forward to this.

A foldable desktop, an SUV-laptop, a huge hunk of ugly plastic. And, of course, you're stuck with Vista.

Here's something you guys need to consider...Maybe they're going to offer different paint jobs...Like, paint schemes and what not. They aren't going to sell a laptop that isn't going to appeal to tons of people.

That could be. Still, you could have the best paint job imaginable and it still wouldn't offset Dell's typical XPS overbranding. Most people know what their laptop is, it doesn't need to have the XPS logo on every possible fixed point on the machine.

    Wacky tacky!

I actually think the x205 looks nicer than that Dell.

The 8600GS will be the base graphics offering I believe, with the 8700 available.

Really, all I'm seeing is the same chassis they use for the 17in Inspiron and Vostro, with just a fancy paint job. Shame. Dell should have gave the XPS model something a little classier.

8600m gs or 8700m? what happened to 8600m gt? Is that some kind of marketing ploy to basically ensure you get the 8700?

The big problem there with the design is the keyboard totally clashes with the paint job. It looks like they took the M1710 keyboard and implanted it in this thing. In fact, this thing looks like a bad photoshop, unfortunately I think it's real.

Even with a different paint job the laptop will still look horribly boxy.

I was thinking the same thing; dissapointing indeed. A 17" M1330 should've been the best looking design ever. I was considering saving up for a next-gen XPS notebook gaming rig, not anymore.

Goodness, I would not put that abomination in my room even if they pay me for doing that.

Besides, with 1720 chassis and 8700GT? It better be much cheaper than X205 (which looks alright, at least).

It looks like Dell tried to go for the fake CF look, but botched it pretty badly. And the red wedges are just plain stupid. I think they had the 'flashy lights' thing done pretty well in the last 3 generations (Gen 2, M170, and 1710) but botched this one BADLY. If they really needed to do a red and black laptop, why the hell didn't they copy off Asus and their G1 and G2 laptops (which are ripped off the older XPS models in and of themselves...)

And the 8600GS in this is DESPICABLE. The 8700GT should have been the only GPU available until the NB8E (8800M) comes out this winter. I will be very happy that my 5.5lb Asus F8Sv will be able to outrun this 10lb behemoth "gaming" notebook. Pathetic.

After the brilliance shown in the M1330, I was expecting a bit (ok, a hell of a lot more) than this. Its cheaper to buy an Inspiron 1720/ Vostro 1700 and upgrade the graphics yourself, and it will look a damn sight nicer as well.

Really, it doenst look that bad if you totally ignore the paint scheme, except not a big fan of all those extra buttons on the front of the case.

The source of the information is notebook italia which are quite relaiable , so here are more "features" :

    1. They have higher res pictures which show the "paint job" to be something that looks like carbon fiber , my guess its just looks because this thing weighs 1Kg more ( 5Kg ) .

    2. No one thought its possible but DELL managed to create an even uglier notebook , since the tasteless 9300/9400/xps were actually quite good notebooks , this one must be the best notebook of all time .

    3. In a customer friendly move DELL is "upgradeing" us to the 8700GT since no one will order a gaming notebook with the weaker 8600GS in the first place .

    4. Another "feature" is a 230W PSU .

The only good thing I have to say about this notebook is that suddenly the Inspiron 1720 looks a whole lot better :)

Lemme know when Dell's done using the ugly stick they used to beat down the 1730. I'm thinking of paying Apple visit :)

But seriously, that thing is horrendous. How much alcohol was the manager drinking when he approved that design?

And its not even fake CF, just black dots on a silver background....Ewwwwww....Dell has 'riced' the XPS flagship....Clevo and Sager are about to get a lot more customers for the 5790. Now thats a beautiful gaming notebook.
