So, the M17x has switched to 16:9.

This is not going to end well. *sneaks out the back*

Probably can't handle the heat or power consumption, like the 480M.

The 460M is still a VERY capable GPU and can handle a lot of games at 1080p with high detail settings and still provide very playable frame rates.

If that's not enough power for your gaming needs, I'm sure Alienware and Nvidia will eventually have something else to show you. *cough*

But if you want an Alienware with the best possible performance right now then the new M17x series is what you've got.

Dell and AMD have slowly become much more friendly over the last few years. Considering all other AMD Fusion-based budget notebooks we're seeing at CES it certainly stands to reason we'll see something Fusion-based from Dell at some point this year.

That's all I can say about that.

"Eventually" could be 6 months or 60 months from now ;)

Everybody knows that companies role out new technology as it becomes available (and financially viable).

Good Lord. 60 months of AW posters guessing at GTX 580M SLI in an M13x.

Thanks for the info, but some point this year is very broad time frame :D. I wait little more, because have not seen any 12-13inch version yet. Have you seen at CES bigger than 11inch? Is this Acer one?

I wouldn't hold my breath for any company to release a 13-inch notebook with dual high-end graphics cards ... unless consumers start saying they want notebook that are 10-inches thick.

    I don't know how else you'd fit two high-end GPUs in a 13-inch footprint.

Acer and MSI have both announced larger form-factor (13-inch screens and larger) notebooks that use the AMD Brazos platform APUs.

I can't recall if there were any other 13-inch and larger Brazos notebooks at CES ... but I'm running on only 3 hours of sleep (2 hours and 30 minutes of sleep the night before that) thanks to the chaos of CES.

There might have been others that I can't recall due to sleep deprivation.

Toshiba has an update to the Satellite L675D, but I can't recall if that's still using standard voltage AMD CPUs or if they put an E-350 APU inside it for the beginning of 2011.

Alienware fans might be considered an enthusiastic lot but they're not all a realistic lot.

seriously oh soo confused with this crap and considering i only game 20% of the time i am ohhh soo confused. No manufacture can make a decent high end brand priced competitively that actually works. With video technology changing so quick and Nvidia charging outrageous prices the financially wise decision is to play console games and probably PS3 at that. Regardless i love PC TECH and probably get suckered into the next best thing but regardless it ends up being a FAIL and only works 6 months after release and by then new video cards are being introduced. BRING ON THE PAIN!!!

    Thought of another good response:

6 to 60 months...sounds like the launch time frame for an MSI notebook.

Ok Mr Jackson, the question (one of them at least) of the hour is 1 or 2 460M's in the R3? IF you saying that one 460M (@1/2 to 2/3 the power of desktop 460) is "enough" power these days I disagree.

Has Dell "given up" and just joined the masses with 460M single cards in the M17x?

I hope that cough indicates an M18x or more capable M17x with dual GPU's down the road ;) Could you elaborate on a few things regarding M17x-R3 for us? Specifically:

    1. What is it constructed of this time around? The R2 is mainly aluminum with a plastic palm rest.
    2. Does it support dual graphics or is it limited to a single graphics card?
    3. Any IPS/RGB LED options or is it strictly WLED?

    Thanks.

I hope its not *cough BS* :p

Looking forward to *something* new... that or I will finally have to go to Clevo and finally use that Alienware sticker I have been hoarding for so long...

The updated M17x uses essentially the same chassis as the previous revision of the M17x The ports are a bit different, the soft touch paint job are different, and there is a 3D emitter located under the screen on the 3D configurastion but I believe the chassis materials are the same.

The M17x uses a single high-performance graphics card.

I believe that Alienware is only using WLED screens, but since Dell and Alienware have made changes before in the OEM component offerings, it's not outside the realm of possibility that we'll see different screen options in the online configuration tool.

I believe the new XPS laptops will get SB starting Feb 1 (they say that date will vary by region, so the US will probably be first and so on)
