Except for the screen size, what is the difference between the E6400 and E6500? Everything else looks the same to me.

Both are conveniently tabulated on one specification sheet.

Most of the core hardware is the same. The E6500 has the option of NVIDIA® Quadro® NVS 160M1 256MB DDR3 while the E6400 has NVS 160M1 256MB DDR2 which will give some boost to 3D graphics. Also, the E6500 offers "OR FIPS Fingerprint Reader" under the security options. The bigger display on the E6500 means that WUXGA (1920x1200) is an option.

Otherwise, the E6500 is bigger and heavier than the E6400.

What is the difference between this OR FIPS reader and the normal fingerprint reader?

    Perhaps FIPS is more secure.

For more about the E6500 read the documentation.

And, in case you haven't found it, there's more discussion about the E series in this thread.

That schedule is a few months old. The E6400 / E6500 were actually launched in August (but the delay would, in part, be attributable to Intel). However, I'm sure I've seen mention of September for the smaller E series.

Did you see this other thread discussing the E series?

All praise to Dell for continuing along the natural progression for their laptops but it still leaves me disappointed. The reason is that I am now certain they will never produce another Latitude that I can buy, the range is now muddled with "essential" version (I thought Vostro was supposed to be the "essential" range while latitude was the tier above?) and the workstation graphics cards make them unsaleable to me. I preferred it when they used proper consumer cards.

I suppose I don't have much grounds to complain, as these are business laptops, but it does leave me wondering where to go next for my work laptops.

Why won't Dell use DDR3 1066 MHz RAM?

At the current pricing and timings, DDR3 doesn't seem to bring a lot of benefit.

There is some discussion in this thread, but we need more real life data.

Are true dual independant monitors (Dell 24" 1920X1200) possible with E-Port plus and the E-Series or is it only stretch and clone mode?

    Thanks

See this thread and, if you need further clarification, I suggest you ask there.
