CNet.com is reporting that Dell will be releasing its new 17" screen notebook very soon. Although Dell is slow to arrive at such a size notebook, Apple, HP and Toshiba have had such a size notebook on the market for a year, the company claims ithas beendue to a limited range of brightness and resolution available for 17" screens and limited demand. So Dell is deciding what it's customers want, and it deems they did not really want a 17" sized-screen until now. They also believe customers have no interest in AMD processors, as indicated by CEO Kevin Rollins who said in an interview this week "customers aren't really asking for AMD processors." So, let's vote, is Dell giving you what you want and do you want to seen an AMD 64processor based Dell notebook?
Inspiron 9000 Something
The new Inspiron 9000 series notebook that will have the 17-inch screen will compete with the HP zd7000,Toshiba P25/P35 and Apple PowerBook 17" screen notebooks. HP will soon be releasing a zd8000 notebook to replace the zd7000 series. According to NotebookReview.com site visitors, you guys are really looking forward to another widescreen option notebook because in our last poll here are the results from the survey conducted:
Many manufacturers are now releasing Widescreen notebooks -- in fact, some people are now finding it hard to get the notebook they want without widescreen. What do you prefer, a regular screen or widescreen LCD?
Yes, I of course want a widescreen to see more stuff [70%] No, widescreen seems to distort games and other programs graphics [16%] Does not matter to me really. [14%]
People just flat out love widescreen displays! We expect the new Dell notebook will sell well, even though the higher-ups at Dell have cold feet getting into the market because they see the 6% market share of 17" notebooks as lacking. My argument would be that Dell to a degree determines what the market can and will buy, so why not give customers more choice and see what happens? In our next poll, let's vote and let us know if you think Dell is providing you will all the choices you want.
Kevin Rollins says You Don't Want AMD 64 DellNotebooks
And in relation to this whole Dell deciding what you want, CEO Kevin Rollins said in a CNet article this week, "Advanced Micro Devices has gotten much better at producing technology, Rollins said, but he indicated that AMD would have to overcome several impediments before Dell would buy its processors. For one thing, Dell customers aren't really asking for AMD processors." So, once again Dell is deciding what you want. Let's vote, would you like to have the choice of an AMD processor in your notebook or do you not care?

I don't think that, overall, there is going to be a huge demand for the 17" laptop. I think that most people want portability in their laptop, not big screens. I know there are some people that want it, but a screen this big is mostly for people who want to watch DVDs a lot with a lot of people and need a big screen to do this. I think, from what I have read from other people, and my own personal preferences, the biggest market for laptops involves a computer that is not too heavy, in the 4-6lb range, with a good widescreen, and a capable 3D graphics card. A lot of people have been complaining about the Intel Extreme graphics. A dedicated 64mb or 128mb video card seems basic to me. Basics like a Pentium M chip, good RAM, a CD burner/DVD drive, and wireless card are also needed. The 8600 is close to this, but a little to big, and the 700m does not have a good graphics chip. I don't think I am alone in wanted a laptop like this.

I agree.
They should make a top-of-the-line inspiron in the mid range.
I'm afraid Dell just wants to differentiate its customers by not offering a really good all-in-one solution so they can charge them different prices.
A Dell spec'ed like the TM4501 but with Dell prices would quite literally be awesome.
Keep my DV1000 or get an Inspiron with an extra modular battery and an ATI 9600 128mb for the same price? Decisions, decisions. -
I agree too...
I think dell should make laptops that are powerful but at the same time portable... -
Well, I think dell should offer AMD64 in its lines, it as powerful if not more than most of the regular Pentium chip they have and the battery life is also better. As for the 17 inch screen size, I don't think the full customer base of this particular model is at its peak just yet.

I don't really care about mobility that much. The bigger the screen the better. I only use the laptop at home but I need to be able to take it from room to room so it doesn't really matter how big and heavy it is. It's really literally a desktop replacement. The same is true for the power consumption. I will never be far away from the next outlet. It would actually be convenient if the "brick" was built into the laptop.

Although notebook is meant for portability, the number one selling category of notebook is desktop replacement. Notebooks with advanced features at a lower price (just with occasional portability) are certainly attractive ones to many people. And, if Dell comes with 17" notebook with good quaulity, it will sell.
When I think of portability, notebooks with 10" screens such as Fujitsu P7010 and Sony TR3A are my favorite ones, which Dell does not offer, yet. -
I think the truth is that everyone wants something different, which is why you have to have different options. I like the way HP has it with there range of models and screens and cpu's. Alot of choices for alot of people.
I was going to go with a ZD7000, but am going to wait to see what dell offers. Im not sure if I want a 17 or 15 inch screen. Probably 15 because I have a bag for up to 15.4 screens [ ] -
hmm...unlike popular belief i kinda like 17 inchers, its jus that i do agree with some of you they should either offer intel AND amd on all notebooks n u could chose which one, or, in my opinion, offer pentium m and centrino on a 17 incher because some people like me favor big screens/tv tuners/heavy graphics cards etc but with centrino. The Sony A series comes sooo close to this but the graphics is where it cuts back, only having a 64 mb 9700. this new dell better have thier "exclusive" 9800 or else no one will buy it. they should probably put amd 64 (possibly fx), or p4 5xx, but i'd like it, like i said b4, to have pentium m, especially with the new 765 2.1 ghz processors.

dell has never been that great about building light, portable high-end computing products. only ibm, apple, sony, and samsung can make that claim. i'd like to see dell just repackage samsung's m40, which is the world's lightest 17" widescreen at 2.99kg. if dell were take the m40 and add a 128mb ati 9800 (which is based on the x800 architecture) they would have something that blows away the competition. the dothan is plenty fast enough (wait until the move to the 533mhz frontside bus!) the 2.1ghz dothan should blow away the current mobile p4 found in dell's current gaming rig and bench very close to amd's notebook version of the amd64. the dothan has a larger cache and better max TDP than the p4 or amd64. with a 17" notebook the percentage of power going to the screen increases dramatically, so i think that also cements the dothan as the processor of choice.

I have been screaming at the Dell site for years when you going to have a wide screen Notebook. Apparently some read my e-mail and decided to look into it, they seen there was a new field and dove into it. I bought their Inspiron 8500 wide screen flagship last year, it went bad but they exchanged it for a loaded with WXUGA screen and other goodies in the new configuration. A 8 DVD+R/RW-CD-R/RW burner besides Microsoft Office Professional 2003 and Business Contact Manager 2003, Money 2004, Sonic My DVD, all with the owner *keys* which I installed and had to give them to the rep who said great your in business, one after the other. I also installed my own CD that I had you can read it all in my signature.[ ]
