thanks a lot Rick. Btw guys i am also working our channels here with PCMall Gov to see if they can give us a good price. Would any of you be interested in doing a poll to see how many of us are likely to make this purchase within the next 30 days ? 60 days? If we know a number, perhaps we can all do a collective bargaining either through CDW or PcMall Gov.

Please let me know. I dont know how to set up a poll here. If we can all indicate our interest then we can negotaite with them

I got my 8104WLMi from sparco.com on Thursday. First, let me say thank you to all you who participate in these forums. You information was very helpful in my choice of what notebook to buy.

I see that several other people are planning to write reviews for their 8100's when they get them, so I'll leave a detailed review for them. But, here are a few initial impressions to tide you over:

    The good:
    - First, this computer is very attractive - slim and not as heavy or oversized as I expected.
    - Build quality is higher than I expected. It feels solid, the display closes tightly, and there aren't any gaps or misalignment in the parts
    - The LCD isn't the best I've ever seen, but it is right up there. Very pleasing, very crisp, and no dead pixels
    - Performance-wise, it's quick. If you're used to a 7200RPM drive, you can tell the hard drive I/O is slower than usual, but it's by no means slow. Overall, the system is quick and responsive
    - 3D performance seems very good and the LCD seems to have a low refresh rate, making it very suitable for games and video playback
    - Audio quality is very high. I was surprised and relieved to hear that the audio out was very clean - no hiss or any interference
    - The smartcard is a neat feature which I have chosen to use, but I worry about losing the card, even though it comes with an emergency card. I'd prefer the fingerprint reader they have on the IBM laptops (can't lose my finger!)
    - Overall, my impression of the hardware is very good. I'm just as satisfied with this as I have been with my other (but very different) notebook - a rugged Thinkpad X31

    The not-so-good:
    - It comes only with a recovery disk image (a Ghost image) on two CDs. You don't get an actual Windows XP installation CD. So, if you want to do a custom install, it's not easy. It ships from the factory with two ~45GB FAT32 partitions with the Acer standard WinXP Pro install on one and the other (called Data) empty, and a ~2GB hidden recovery partition (not locked by the BIOS). I wanted a single NTFS parition. I used Seagate tools to do a quick zero out of the drive and then repartition it as a single 93GB parition. I then used the recovery CDs to reinstall everything. The Ghost image will put it on whatever the first partition is, and won't set up partitions, so my single large partition stayed intact. But, it was FAT32. So i ran convert.exe after the installation and converted it to NTFS.
    - Another annoyance is that the recovery CDs (and factory install) change the default font settings for Windows to a bigger font, and change the window gadgets (e.g. maximize, minimize, close) to be larger. The intent seems to be to improve readability on this high-rez (high dpi) screen. For me, it was really annoying and I found that it would goof up how things lined up in certain applications. When talking to tech support (see next issue), the support guy told me it's a huge hassle to undo that. You essentially have to go hunt through various Windows settings to get it to go back to default. What I did find was that when I recovered the system from the recovery CDs, there is a boot disc that it starts from and finishes with. If, after just having done the recovery, you take out the boot disc before the system has started for the first time, it won't make those adjustments to Windows, and everything will work fine. The only caveat is that it doesn't install some of the Acer applications (e.g. ePowerManagement). But, those are on that boot CD can be later installed if you want.
    - The only big issue I had was a bad memory module. The system came with two 512MB memory modules. Right after taking the laptop out of the box, I started having all kinds of stability problems. It took me a long time to figure out that memory was the problem because it was so sporatic. Before I had figured out that it was memory, I called tech support and told him the system was hanging, even in the BIOS, and it was having trouble POSTing (obviously a hardware problem). He told me it could be a conflict between Norton Antivirus and anti-spyware software. I laughed. But, he agreed to have it returned for repair and set up Fedex to come pick it up the next day. But I really wanted to get my new baby working so I continued fiddling with it and started to hone in on it being memory. I took out one of the memory modules and ran Memtest86 (a great app). The first module passed an hour of testing. So swapped it out and put in the other one. When I ran Memtest86 on the second module, it immediately found errors. I put the good module back in and the system has been 100% solid ever since. I called back Acer tech support and they sent out a new memory module via 2-day. I should get it Tuesday. BTW, all the Acer support was here in the States, not offshore. The first guy was a rube, but the second guy was very helpful. I never waited more than about 5 minutes on hold.

So, there are some of my first impressions. If my experience is any indication, I think this is a great laptop (despite a few initial bumps). I'm very pleased with it, and hope that it lasts a long time.

Thank you VERY much for your first impressions. I really awnted to see these. One thing, I know an easy way to get all the fonts back to normal size. It's relatively easy if I'm thinking about the same thing you are. Anyway, shout me a message on AIM at Sellitus, I'm more curious about the system now :)

Athreya, if you find a company that has a better price or availability, I'm in it. Right now my order is in on PCNation, but I'll cancel it if you find something cheaper or faster shipped. So I'm in :)

Sellitus: I think if we form a small group say of 5 or more people who want to buy it over the next 30 days, we can approach CDW or PCmallgov and negotiate. I was suggesting that we find out atleast how many are serious potential buyers in order to enable me to talk to someone.
Are you on? Any one else?

Amazing Radio: Thanks for a great review. Little disquieting that you had send back a brand new machine. Isnt it?

Amazing Rando: Thanks for the review and we are all excited to know that someone is "really" shipping, I have one question that may not benefit the entire forum but it is a critical question for my purchase:

If you have the time could you look at any spred sheet file in several resolutions and let me know if the text is negatively affected i.e. 1600 x , 1400 x , 1200 x , and 1024 x.

The reason I'm asking is because my Dell 8200 (wuxga 1600x1200) is not Wide Aspect AND I usually have to lower the resolution down to 1024 x 768 for clients to see the data (too tiny at 1600x1200).

I'm ready to purchase if the data above is not distorted (pixelated and/or jagged)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Aw..... That's a big big bummer. Glad you got everything worked out though. I'm a little worried about this now - does anyone have a good idea as to which notebook brands will do this (not give you a windows cd, only a recover cd)? I was told by my boss to never buy a hp/compaq laptop that wasn't in their business line, because the home line doesn't even have drivers available for download off the internet -- i.e. you are restricted to the operating system that ships with the laptop and if you have to fall back on the recovery cd. I'm not sure the extent that he was correct here, but I'm also hoping that this isn't a common practice with all the manufacturers. It makes me want to hop on over to discountlaptops.com or some place like that and pick up a sonoma there once they are available, since you can buy them without an O/S.

Sorry if this is off topic - perhaps if there are enough brands that have annoying recovery cd/windows disc practices, I will be convinced the acer is right for me and remain on topic :)

    2 other questions...

First..... edit - I found out the answer myself

Also, has anyone seen reports of the sonoma platform's ability to overclock? I was under the impression that ddr2 had quite a bit of headroom, but I wasn't sure how the PCIe bus or the new platform in general would overclock, or if there was even bios options or windows controls for it.

I have been Dell customer for 10 years and they DO give you the operating sys. CD's (OEM version) and they may or may not provide the drivers on a separate cd.

I am a big fan of Norton Ghost because I have had to use it often over the years! To me the ACER shipping with a ghost is a real plus to me!

I would think that once loaded that you can update any drivers or updates as usual...hope this helps.

I am unaware of any neegatives to the ghost image provided for the average user.

Wow! I didn't expect so many questions, but then again, there isn't much info about this notebook out there yet. I was looking for (but not finding) a lot more information before I bought mine, so I sympathize with you.

For sake of economy, I'll answer everyone's questions in a single post. I'll post a big reply shortly. I'll also try to include some pictures.

Before I get to people's questions, below is the link to pictures I took today. They're quick and dirty, but might be helpful to some of you. Also, I took pics with my 15" IBM T42 for comparison.

Acer TM8104WMLi pictures and T42 comparison pics

Also, I wanted to add one item I meant to mention in the first post regarding the fan. The fan isn't overly loud, but there is a "wooshing" sound. It's not too distracting unless you're in a library or something. But, the fan does run most of the time, even at idle. FWIW.

Ok, here are answers to your questions:

Sellitus: I'll IM you about the font thing

athreya: Yeah, it was very disquieting that there was a hardware issue right off the bat. I've almost always stuck with IBM or Compaq laptops based on bad experiences with less known brands, so I was freaked out that I might have made a mistake when started having problems. But, notebook DDR2 DRAM is very very new, so I'm not surprised, and overall, my experience since taking out the bad DIMM has been great. I very content with this machine. Oh, and the color is silver with black trim and black keys (see pics). I paid about $2172 shipped 2-day on sparco.com.

golfwesi: As you probably know, anytime you reduce the resolution on an LCD to something lower than its native resolution, the quality will be lower. But, I know what you're getting at. Some LCDs look pretty good when set to a lower resolution. Others are horrible. The trick with this one is that it is widescreen. First, if you don't set it to "expand" in the display settings before you change the resolution it will simply make the area around the native pixel black. For instance, if you turned it to 1400x1050, it would look exactly the same, but there would be black bars on the left and right sides 140 pixels wide. If you turn on "expand", then it will stretch it out to fill the screen. Many resolutions are 4:3, so it will get distored (e.g. with 1280x1024). But, the widescreen resolutions keep the proper proportions. 1280x768 looks ok, and 1024x600 looks very good. But, the best way to make spreadsheets readible is do leave the resolution at its native and use the zoom feature within Excel. In Excel, try holding down the ctrl key and using your scroll wheel on your mouse. You'll interactively be able to zoom it in. Because it's at the native resolution, it will look a lot sharper than reducing the overall resolution of Windows.

joeld100: I have noticed that Acer doesn't have drivers up on their site yet, but all of the drivers are on the system CD that's used to boot before you do recovery.

Thanks again Rando for the followup - I'm sure you'll be prime support for all of us waiting to get our hands on one :)

I keep telling myself I shouldn't increase my laptop budget to fit this one in... But man, it's just so tempting. I keep hoping that I'll find something similar by spring time, but I'm doubting it - geez, it's got a modular bay, dvi, bluetooth, dvd burner, X700 mobility, high res screen (I hope it will be about right - I don't think I can stand a WUXGA, but I think the WSXGA or whatever this thing is will be about right- Will work wonders for divided tabs in visual studio...), 1gb of ram, docking ability if I ever want it, nice size.... Man, I need to ask for a raise :D

joeld100 - I totally understand your predicament. This is the first notebook I've had in a long time that came with everything I wanted right out of the box. No need to add a PC card, or more memory, or be disappointed by a lack of DVD burner (heck, this one even does dual layer!). I also spent more than my budget, but I hope this will last me for a good couple of years without needing to upgrade.

athreya - I just checked on sparco.com. When I ordered mine, there were 3 in stock and it looked like the ETA for more at several of their warehouses was the end of January. Now it's showing Feb 15 as the earliest at one warehouse, and the rest in the first or second week of March! Word must be getting out about this machine!

    AmazingRando,

Do you think a 7200 rpm drive would be ok or does it already seem hot with the 5400. Since they provide the ghost it would probably be pretty easy to swap out the 5400 for a 7200. This is the one thing that seems lacking to me in this laptop. I guess they had to make a decision to go either size or perf but the choice they made is not ideal for my needs. If I went with this laptop I would want to swap out the HD for a faster drive and then use the original drive for backup in an external enclosure.

Also, I am also coming from a Thinkpad and would be interested to know how the two compare. I really like the thinkpad keyboard and pointing stick. I don't know if I am going to like the glide pad after using a thinkpad for four years. If you have any thoughts on what is better or worse compared to the IBM I would be interested in knowing.

It would be interesting to see some bench marks for this laptop. I know on some of the other Forums there is a program to generate pi 2M times. Some of the fastest times so far are below 2 minutes, it would be interesting to see if Sonoma improves on the current best times for 2ghz Dothan laptops. There is also another forum that is comparing HD speeds. Have you run any of these benchmarks or any others?

    Thanks

Rando: Thanks for the quick, complete and honest "first-hand" review - also for the great pics - you really outdid yourself - and I REALLY mean that! I think the biggest "con" for all of us is that currently you've got one and we don't! I'm sure I have a quorum on that issue alone! My 2 cents worth: (1) I think PartitionMagic would have removed that 2nd partition without you having to re-build the entire image. I remember having the same issue with the partitioned 60 GB H.D. on my Acer 803. (2) Laptops only come with Recovery CD's - they are so, so driver dependent that you'd be lost without them - all you should care about is that it comes with all the current drivers and a Product ID # for Windows XP. (3) What's the big deal about black cases? My Acer 803 has the same silver one as the 8104 and two years later looks as good as new - even after fighting sand for a year in the Persian Gulf! (4) I would be very careful before I put a 7,200 RPM H.D. in the laptop - you can fry an egg on top of my 4,200 RPM H.D. in the 803! Can you verify that yours even has a 5,400 RPM H.D.? (5) I've had nothing but a GREAT experience with ACER America Customer Service - if they couldn't get it straight over the phone - they would give you an RMA number in a snap, I'd ship it back to them via FedEx and next thing I'd know within a couple of days it would be back to me FIXED! (6) Sorry about the one bad memory chip in your new laptop - consider yourself lucky that you didn't have the 803 - with it you had to pry out the keyboard to get to the 2nd RAM chip! Did you try swapping the two around? (7) And lastly, I am disappointed that the fan is constantly "whooshing" - I think a laptop, like a good child, should be "seen and not heard"! Once again, thanks for your timely and honest initial eval - stay tuned for my own!

Steven: I've actually surprised that the notebook doesn't run hot. I ran BurnInTest Pro for 15 minutes, flexing CPU, memory, hard drive, and GPU, but the system was barely warm. The fan was blowing out fairly warm (but not hot) air. I think you would be ok with a 7200RPM drive, particularly if you're not going to be out in the baking desert, or trying to run this thing on battery.

As for the trackpoint versus the tackpad, I have a strong preference for the trackpoint. It's hard to go to the trackpad after so many years, but it's easier than I expected. I think I'll do ok. Plus, I have a mini optical mouse I can hook up when It's sitting on a desk. Oh, and one note on the keyboard. I was skeptical about the keyboard being curved. It really made me think twice about the 8104. But, it's turned out to be a real non-issue. Key spacing and travel are good. Overall, no complaints about the keyboard.

I don't have any benchmarks, but I'm sure someone will run them in the not too distant future. I'd offer, but I have a midterm this week, so I won't have time to fiddle with it. If nobody has done any perf testing by the weekend, I might give it a try.

raquu: thanks for the kudos. I'm glad the info is helpful. I pretty much just tried to put out there info that I would look for before buying. Here are my thoughts:
    1) Yup, I could have done it with partition magic, but it was part of trying out doing a clean WinXP install. No big deal
    2) I agree about the recovery CD's. The drivers can be such a pain (e.g. on Thinkpads), but a clean WinXP install without all the fluff apps is oh so nice
    3) I love the look of the Acer. No issues with the silver, even though I like the black Thinkpads - you people are being too picky!! [ ;)]
    4) At the highest performance setting, my Thinkpad X31 with a 4200RPM 80GB drive it in runs so hot that it's like hot magma in your lap. Amazingly, the 8104 doesn't run hot. Go figure.
    5) So far, my Acer support experience has been pretty good. Even the rube who was telling me my memory problem was a NAV software issue still quickly set up a FedEx pickup and RMA
    6) Changing out memory, the hard drive, the wireless card, or the DVD-ROM drive in the 8104 is very very easy. Acer did a great job. And, yup, I tried swapping them around. The one DIMM is definitely broken (or at least has a very bad attitude).
    7) I totally agree with you on the fan. I'm a bit disappointed in that. It's not that loud and most people won't mind, but I realy like silence. That being said, I'm going to see if I can fiddle with the power settings. Given that the computer runs so cool, maybe there's a way to keep the fan from coming on, or it to run slower. Who knows.

Hey rando, I have one too. I don't know if it is just my machine but when you put in the headphones does it work okay? ALso is there a red light that is in the back of the hole?

How is the dvd drive for you? Does it vibrate quite a bit when you try to install something?

    Shano:
    1) That particular movie was shot Cinemascope which has an aspect ratio of 1:2.35. The 8104's LCD is ~1:1.77. Because Cinemascope is a lot wider aspect ratio, you get black bars at the top and bottom. If it was pan and scan, where they cut off the side of the image (evil) to fit a normal TV screen aspect ratio, it would be 1:1.33 (or 4:3) and would have bars at left and right. The only way you can fill the entire screen would be with HDTV material, which is also 1:1.77 (16:9), though a large portion of movies are shot Academy, which is 1:1.85, so the bars at top and bottom are negligable.
    2) I've tried MS Flight Simulator 2004 and Battlefield 1942 on the laptop so far. I can't give you frame rates, but maybe this weekend I'll look into that. In FS2004, like a lot of DirectX games, you can choose the native resolution of the screen (1680x1050). Battlefield is a bit older, so it only supports 1400x1050. In that case, it seems to stretch it, but the quality is still quite high. I haven't tried Doom3 or Half-Life 2, but I think both will support the native resolution without stretching. Performance in the two games I have played is very good. Granted, you can't play it with 6xAA and all that, but you can still play it at decent quality and get high frame rates. No complaints so far and I do a fair amount of gaming.

Sellitus: Google is a good place to look for info for on 802.11n, and it's a bit off topic, but in sum it's the next-gen way faster version of Wi-Fi. Here's a link with some info.

Thanks for the pics. It's the first laptop I looked at and went "Wow, that's a really beautiful laptop" lol. Can't wait to get mine, and I didn't know there was an "N" version of wireless networking...can you give me details about it?

    1) The headphones seem to work very well - clean, no issues. Though, I did notice that the mic was on by default which caused a weird echo until I turned it off. The red light is the laser for the SPDIF optical digital audio out. It didn't come with a cable for that, and it's not the standard TOSLINK, so I don't know what we do about a cable for that.
    2) Yeah, the DVD drive definitely vibrates. It's spinning a CD at 24X, which isn't super fast, but fast enough. The vibration doesn't seem excessive.

Hey thanks, hmm for some reason when i plug my headhones in they don't work unless I hold them into it. Damn it, I don't want to have to return and switch now since i can't go without a computer for school. The vibration on mine when I installed the drivers was vibrating pretty hard, but has not been an issue with anything else.

AmazingRando: thanks again for the detailed reply to my question and the great pics! Just to make sure that I understand you correctly regarding lowering the resolution:

    1. my "spreadsheet" is actually my data displayed thru Filemaker Pro (I'll see if there is a zoom feature )

    2. you stated the 1024 x 600 is "very good" - by this do you mean it is in the wide screen (stretched) view AND the text is not pixelated or jagged?

If I understood your reply then I'm ready to pull out the plastic as soon as someone has them in!

Great info - I pulled the plug and ordered one. Not sure on delivery date - hoping this week. Was looking at Dell (XPS / 8600 / 9200) and LG (New Models) but decided for price and componets Acer had it. Only unknown for me was quality and some research seems to be ok. Hope so - my 4 year Dell was (is) a work horse and is still chugging - hope the Acer does as well. I will put my $0.02 in when I get the unit.

    Hi
I wrote to CDW as advised but got an out of office reply yesterday. Waiting to hear back.

Can others share where they are ordering from and how much?

Just got word from my Account Executive at CDW that their current ETA on the 8104 is the end of this week. He also verified with me that CDW's $199 Extended Warranty on the laptop is total coverage for three (3) years including accidental damage! Covers everything except shipping to Acer America. Did any of you guys hit him up for a quote?

Hey all, was just wondering if anyone could give me an estimate of when the 8104WLMi is to be released in the UK or Europe? I saw in the Acer forum somebody mentioned 2-3 weeks. How do these things normally work, is Europe always way last? Acer haven't replied to a mail I sent them.

Secondly, is the lack of widescreen something to really worry about? I want the machine to do programming, general image editing, web dev, etc., I'm sort of out of the gaming loop and have a seperate dvd player, but I have to admit, the widescreen does seem to look cooler.

Delorian: from what I can gather, 2-3 weeks is the expected time that they're expected in the UK.

Not sure I understand you comment re: widescreen. The 8104 is widescreen. If you comparing to other options, I think it's just a matter of personal preference based on what you'll use it for.

I've already spoken to them, which is why I quoted the 2-3 week time. They also gave me the list price for the 8104, so I'd be pretty sure we're getting that.

Details of the 8100 series are on the ACER UK site as well, though not on any UK resellers yet.

How does acer handle upgrades? If I buy the 8103 and drop in a second 512mb stick of ram, does that void the warranty in any way? I plan on getting the 8104 probably, but either way I may put in a new hard drive at some point, so I was curious how this worked.

Is the only way to reasonably get our hands on the 8104 is to place an order on the waiting list? After calling several of the listed Acer resellers they are giving me dates ranging from Feb 15th - March 15th.

It seems that they do not pre-order but only order as pre-orders are received. Is this everyone's understanding?

If so who are you finding is the best company to place my order with?

    FYI: just got these quotes:

CDW $2,211 (only after telling him others are selling them for around $2,157 )

PC Mall $2,239 with free head phones, ear buds, and an Epson printer - I tried to let them keep the "freebies" and lower the price but no cigar!

Azn, they are just reading the mis-information. I spoke directly to an Acer pre-sales customer service agent and was told the same thing. They are just going by what they have which I strongly believe is just printed incorrectly. I feel confident that the 8103 is on the up and up with regards to the CPU and memory.

people, this is my first post here at the forum, and i'm gonna put it here 4 Acer 8100... BE CAREFUL IF U R GOING TO PURCHASE Acer TravelMate 8103WLMi. I have made an order and now just cancelled it. the 8103WLMi comes with 1.8 GHZ cpu, but it's of the 745 family. this means that its FSB is only 400Mhz even tho the mainboard is Intel 915 family. Be careful cuz Acer didn't specify on their website! I confirmed with an online store and decided not to buy the 745.

    ok here goes:

    my email to CDW:
"hi CDW, I have just made an order on the Acer TravelMate 8103 Notebook
computer product ID: 733813. I noticed a difference between your
website and the Acer official Site. CDW stated that the CPU is 1.8
Intel Pentium M Pocessor 745 Data Bus Speed 400 MHz but official sited said it's Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 (1.86GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 533MHz FSB). I need to know exactly which one is correct and the one that CDW is selling because the 2 CPUs are very different. Thank You!"

    CDW's reply:
    "Good Afternoon ****(my name),

Thank you very much for contacting us here at CDW. I have researched
this computer through Acer's website as well as by phone to our direct Acer contacts available. I have been able to confirm for you that this computer will provide for the following specifications:

    1.8 Intel Pentium M Pocessor 745,
    512MB RAM
    100GB HDD
    DVD-RW,+RW,-RAM
    5-in-1 Card Reader
    15.4" WSXGA
    Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional

Thank you very much for your purchase with us & please let me know if
you have any further questions on this or any of our other products!!"

    Best Regards,
    ****** ******

    So I am not sure....
