Each month we compile data for the number of times a particular notebook is viewed on this site's product pages to get an idea for what mainstream consumers are looking at and thinking about buying. While these laptops aren't necessarily the most popular in terms of sales, they are the most popular based on the number of times our visitors clicked on them.

In that sense, think of this list as the "most clickable laptops of the month" ... the notebooks that most of the people on this site are interested in learning about. Once again, there were few big surprises for the month of June as most of the laptops in the top ten have been popular for a while. Once again, the Dell XPS M1530 remains at the top spot and most of the notebooks in the top 10 list have been here before. The Toshiba Satellite A305 rose a few spots on the list and the new HP Pavilion tx2500 tablet PC makes its first appearance on our list.

There's something amiss with the top 20 threads. Most are older than one month. #1, for example, is dated 02-04-2006, 07:07 PM.

The XPS M1530 still reigns supreme over all!!

I'm sure eventually it'll get knocked off its high chair though. I also have a feeling that the Dell Studio laptops will climb high in the ranks.

I was thinking along similar lines when I read this. The studio lines represent an interesting conglomeration.

Well you could say Dell 1530 is the most popular laptop, or you could say it the most common laptop :)

The problem with these lists is that being on them results in a positive feedback loop: popular laptops on the list just keep being popular. If you want these lists to be more accurate you would need to take them off the front page.

Beat me to it. Sounds like a lot of sore losers. Stop whining, seriously. The article states, it's just based off of which laptops received the most clicks. What more do you want?

I think Aleman has a point here - it biases the per-month results to have the notebooks highlighted on the front page. I'm not whining in any way, since it seems like the most popular laptops in terms of sales are the ones on that list anyways.

However, the reason that listing is on the front page is to help people get to the notebook they want to see quicker, biased statistics or not.

EXACTLY what I was thinking. IMO, this invalidates the point of this exercise.

But to be fair to those counter-whiners, some laptops do indeed deserve to be up there on that list like the runaway number 1.

Actually, we go out of our way to try and PREVENT a "feedback loop" with the most popular list. Even if you spent 24 hours on the homepage clicking on the same notebook on the most popular list it would NOT increase the number of clicks for that laptop.

We realized some time ago that if we counted the clicks coming directly from people who clicked on the most popular laptop list that it becomes a "self-fulfilling prophecy" in that the same notebooks would always show up. People would see a laptop on the most popular list, click on it, and keep the scores up so it stays in the top 10.

That's why we don't count those clicks.

The clicks that count toward the actual total come from those clicks where someone comes to our site (either directly from a search like Google) and clicks on the pricing links in an article or when someone uses the "Notebook Database," "Notebook Reviews," or the "Laptop Search" links on our site.

Sure, there is bound to be "some" influence from the most popular list ... a visitor might see a notebook on the list and then do a search in the notebook database for that notebook (which would count as a click) but we don't count the people who just click on the direct links to laptops in the most popular list.

For better or worse, the main reason these notebooks show up on the list multiple times is because these notebooks are the ones that the majority of our site visitors are researching for purchase. It's one of the reasons the Toshiba Satellite A200/A205 series keeps showing up in the top 10 even though the new (and much improved) A300/A305 series is available: Retail stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, and even online retailers like Amazon and NewEgg are still selling the A200/A205 at low prices and many consumers come to our site to do some research before buying.
