Most Popular Laptops for February 2009

Each month we compile data for the number of times a particular notebook is viewed on this site's product pages to get an idea for what mainstream consumers are looking at and thinking about buying. While these laptops aren't necessarily the most popular in terms of sales, they are the most popular based on the number of times our visitors clicked on them.

In that sense, think of this list as the "most clickable laptops of the month" ... the notebooks that most of the people visiting this site are interested in learning about. Keep in mind that clicks directly on the "Most Viewed Laptops" list do not count toward the total in order to keep the list as fair as possible each month. The only clicks that count toward the monthly totals come from web searches like Google or from visitors who have clicked on a laptop after visiting our "Notebook Database" or inside our forums.

The second month of 2009 showed that there continues to be a trend of consumers looking for low-cost travel notebooks ... or rather netbooks. In fact, last month six of the top 10 most viewed laptops on our site were actually "netbooks" (low-cost ultraportable notebooks). That said, traditional notebooks such as the Lenovo ThinkPad T400 and Dell Studio XPS 16 received a large number of hits thanks to high performance and fair prices. Overall, the list for February 2009 suggests that that consumers are still looking for good values during hard economic times.

Soooooo netbooks... people like them.

Despite Acer's being one of the first netbooks to debut, it's still one of the most popular eh.

 

I think the big reason that netbooks are popular right now is because people have multiple computers and are willing to use a netbook as their "travel laptop" and use a larger notebook or desktop as their main computer.

The other contributing factor to the popularity of the netbook is the status of the economy ... and people are willing to settle for "good enough" performance in a small laptop as long as the price is low. It doesn't make sense to buy a $1,000 laptop if all you want to do is browse the web, type emails, and do some work in Microsoft Office.

 

True Jerry, computers have basically become a necessity and for as low as $220 the netbooks have become pretty nice looking to many I'm sure.

wow netbook domination again i will wager that by the end of the year 9 of 10 will be netbooks.

 

There ARE a lot of netbooks. I actually bought the Lenovo S10 1 month ago and use it 5 days a week to study in the library--mostly watching lectures and typing up notes, and surfing the net. I do wish it had more than 600pixels of height though--this is very limiting and requires scrolling which is actually becoming botheresome...

Wow, so many netbooks! They are a tiny computer, but pack a punch! Cin', how's the Mini 9 doing?

 

Yes, there are alot..pretty soon it's going to get *overwhelming* for peeps when looking for one!

My Mini 9 is doing great...It's what I wanted out of a Netbook!
Glad it's at Number 2 this month...next month I hope for Number 1!!

That is true, and now that we are seeing a bigger push to put dedicated GPU's inside of the netbooks it just makes me even more excited

 

I agree with point #1, but not with point #2. Dell is selling 15" inspirons at under $600; less than $200 more than the Asus 1000HE.
I believe a bunch of people are buying netbooks as their secondary laptops who would not have purchased bigger laptops otherwise. Price is a major driving force, as is the small form factor. Take away either, and netbooks will not sell (ie. consider a 15" netbook weighing 6lbs)
Netbooks are small, so they offer convenience.
Many of them are inexpensive ($~$200), low enough for them to be a "gadget" rather than a full fledged system which needs to be saved for.

 

The difference between $299 and $550 might not sound like much ... until you or a spouse have just been laid off from your job but still need a computer to stay connected to the web and email, and type out a new resume and cover letter while applying for a new job.

I agree that my first point probably accounts for the "majority" of netbook buyers, but I seriously suspect we're seeing an increasing number of laptop shoppers who are looking for a netbook primarily because it is the cheapest solution on the market.

Saving an extra $100+ makes a HUGE difference when you don't have a job and need to provide for a family.

 

Yay for Acer! Im so glad I got mine, pairs perfect with my dell for travel/on the go computing.
