The proportion of metal-based notebooks on the market will continue to increase throughout this year, according to a DigiTimes report.

Hm, interesting.
Although I hope that laptop manufacturers don't adapt the design philosophy of using the metal chassis as a giant heat sink which is sort of what Apple is doing and you can't actually use one of these on your lap. -

Business notebooks have used metal internal frames for some time. This "metal" trend is referring to applying it to the exterior of the notebook.
So basically, it's for aesthetic reasons. -
Sounds good if "metal laptops" refer to computers like the Elitebook, but if it's this:
-
All I want is material that won't attract fingerprints/smudges and is also easy to clean. Brushed aluminum is metal, but it can be very hard to clean...
-
And aluminum is too damn soft. Scratches galore!
-
Well I suspect there is a reason why portable computers went from being called laptops to notebooks. I think people stopped using em on their laps for a while now.
And I am not a scientist but I would think having a good heat conductor in the case would help keep the pc internals cooler than a poor heat conductor like plastic. The only times it would be bad is if your environment is hotter than the insides of your notebook or if you put the case against your skin. Also wouldn't a metal case make cooling the case (notebook cooler) even more effective?
Less flex, less heat, less weight = win win win. Costs are the only issue. -

MacBooks/Pros are the only notebooks I know of that rely on the metal chassis to cool the notebook.
As I said, these notebooks are using metal for aesthetic purposes only; they give the notebook a more "premium" feel. The consumer notebooks will probably not see any changes internally (i.e. where metal really counts, in the chassis frame). Brushed aluminum certainly looks nicer than regular plastic. -
The ODM and JDM must have fell in love with metal covering, but hopefully they will use better hinges.
Although, hopefully these laptop use covering that is not easily dented. -
for example the CF-18, CF-19, Cf-29 and CF-30
