Outlook 2010 includes some radical new features never before seen in a Microsoft email client. But are these new bells and whistles enough to keep the old mail workhorse in the game? We break it down in this review.

Outloook 2010 is weird, using Word to display HTML. Meaning CSS and HTML is borked for 2010. There is a site already dedicated to getting this rectified for Outlook 2010.

hasn't Outlook been doing that since the mid 2000s? IIRC, you can disable that or switch to another rendering engine. at least, back then you could.

With the free web solutions available such as the mentioned gmail and facebook, as well as the free linux apps that are integrated into the desktop (which unlike windoze you are free to customize in 1000's of ways), M$ Outlook/Office is fast becoming irrelevant.

Only businesses who don't care about the bottom line and being locked into a greedy vendor like M$ will buy into the outlook/office upgrade. The rest will have moved on to freedom and save money in the process.

I have set up so many linux installations for friends and relatives and they are growing to LOVE it. They didn't know they had an option, most of them. I am encouraging those I know to use the great free web apps out there.

Most businesses are well down the outlook path and have set up everything through outlook already (because it was one of the first major programs out there). Its expensive to redo the entire network and using free alternatives introduces a myriad of new problems. And until they have a legitimate excel replacement, office will never be irrelevant, at least for businesses. You are generally correct about home use, which is why so many free apps (gmail, firefox, open office etc....) have become so popular.

It is never too late for businesses to switch if they really want to. A recent example is the London Stock Exchange which migrated to Linux and has stated that it will be saving $15M pounds per year.
True, alot of business are locked into M$ because of inertia but they should just use the version they have and not waste on upgrades to 2010... Others can look into for eg. OpenXchange for an outlook replacement.
As for Excel, OpenOffice.org Calc is a pretty darn good alternative for office users unless you fall into the <1% of power users that are brain-wired to Excel and need the extras.
