I've said it before, and I'll say it again. 1366x768 in a 16" screen for a gaming notebook is absolute rubbish.
-
2 hours and a half of battery life in a gaming notebook with a quad core processor is not pathetic at all. It is pretty decent, actually. The screen though, as already stated above, is pathetic indeed.
-
I second the "I hate 1366x768" comments.
On the bright side, this is the first MSI model I've seen with a half usable looking keyboard. -

I saw this announced a couple of weeks back. I think it's overpriced ($1,700); you can get better specs for less money (ASUS G73). The GTX 285M is no slouch but outdated now that the GeForce 400M series was launched. I will be a broken record and say the screen is inexcusable as noted.
Other than that, I like the keyboard layout and for a gaming notebook, it isn't that gaudy-looking. -
GX660R > GT660R
Full HD screen, ATI Mobility HD5870 and cheaper.
and 2+ hours is amazing for a gaming laptop :-\? What self-respecting gaming laptop gets more than 1 (*cough* Sager *cough*)? -
This model being reviewed is outdated, they now have the GX660r with Radeon Mobility 5870 and 1920x1080 screen. This is by far the fastest 15" laptop available today. I also don't agree with battery life being listed as a con for this system. It has the best battery performance available in its class at just under 3 hours with eco settings on, that is unheard of in a desktop replacement gaming laptop. The one con I can agree on is the glossy surfaces and looks of this system. Considering the MSI 1727 is a gorgeous looking laptop, they didn't take one bit of the styling inspiration from it and that is disappointing.
-
There are other models of this laptop that are much more appealing to gamers to review. The GX660R will easily outperform this model.
Love em,hate em, looks aside this is one of the most powerful 15/16" laptops around, period! -
The GX660R really is the best gaming laptop right now for its value.
Pros: - Sound is amazing
- The specs rival the G73, in that only the ram is 2 gigs less
- Battery Life
Cons: - The viewing angles are pretty disappointing
- The flashiness reminds me of a Buzz Lightyear toy, but that's just me -
I really don't understand why they would use that screen for the notebook. It already costs $1600... -
Have you heard of cognitive dissonance?
A new or refurbished Asus G73 is the best gaming laptop for it's value. Divide the price by the performance (3d mark scores, rate the components 1-10, whatever) and you get the value.
Just looking at the machine at $1600 (plus tax, shipping) and that resolution, it's disqualified from value talk. -
Well, I'm looking at the specs in an "all around" manner. All around this is a better deal because it has more features than the G73. It has USB 3.0, it has what could arguably be the best set of speakers in a laptop, it comes with some lighting, has the eco-button which is a huge battery saver, has the turbo fan feature, it also comes with an HD webcam, and it comes with other perks that are favorable to the gamer. To me all of this outweighs the RAM differences and maybe the resolution if your not to picky about eye candy and angles.
The G73H is an awesome machine (its had its problems, but its still a phenomenal machine); however, it's not as versatile as the GX660R.
"Value" was the wrong term for me to use here, "versatile" would be a term better suited for the GX660R. To me it seems like a good balance of price and features.
I do not have either of the laptops and I am familiar with cognitive dissonance and some of the drives behind the functions and what not. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I have no idea if the original G73 had one.. -
Old version: G73JH does not have usb 3.0 ports
New version: G73JW does have a usb 3.0 port -

Thanks for the great review. Are there any images of the insides? I'm interested to see the copper heatpipes and its cooling phase design.

$1700 and all they could fit in was a 768p screen? Lame.
-
this model isnt outdated as earlier mentioned, its just inferior and overpriced. the gx models with the 5870s came out at the same time, cost less, and have a better, more efficient graphics card. this laptop is just for those who insist on having an old green space heater in their notebook.
-
-
btw the gx660r for 1600 comes with a 5870 and a 1920x1080 resolution. like i said this notebook is just meant for those looking for old green space heaters
-
Hopefully we get a review of the GX660R to get the full potential of this laptop .Like line98 posted its cheaper and has the golden 1920x1080 res. that every gamer wants.
-
Too bad it does not have a dx11 video card
-
oh ! Sorry it looks so ugly
-
The review was a decent read, but the machine ultimately has me thinking "what's the point?" (lol @ the 'green space heater' comment by another poster.....)
Aside from a good speaker system (which should come on every gaming focused laptop, regardless of the price point it occupies/is aimed at) and monster HD space, this is a waste of material, time & effort by MSI and would even go so far as to say it'd be a waste of money for the consumer (who, if they did their research, would be aware of better alternatives--such as the aforementioned GX and Asus G73 models).
