Thats right.. theres a new uber GPU for the mobile market ahead of the PCI express bandwagon.
ATI has just released the AGP based 9800, which is derived from the X800, has 8 pipe lines and will be available for the Dell Inspiron XPS notebook...lucky XPS owners. With no mention of other manurfactures in the press release I doubt this one will make it into too many other notebooks for awhile, except maybe alienware and voodoo.
You can find the full press release here:

Well this news is less the 24h old and there is already another review. This one from Toms Hardware is more detailed and has actual benchmark tests, which weren't supplied by ATI !

I was impressed that this chip was actually based on the X800 architecture. That was a very fast turn around time for implementing a mobile version of a new desktop chip and that is a very good sign for mobile users in general.

The interesting thing to me will be to see if and when this chip begins to make its way into the smaller form factor machines like the new Sony S170. It appears they are keeping the clock speed down to manage heat and power usage which one might conclude would allow it to be used in more than just desktop replacement systems but I haven't yet seen any confirmation of that fact.

The chip seems to be a little too hot for laptops, at least, if you compare it to 9600/9700s. Other than that, one more step towards digital paradise. [ :D]
