1600 x 900 bare minimum for 16", but I'd also say 1440 x 900 bare minimum for 15.4. Maybe I'm picky, hell I'm using 1080p on my 16". And where does the G105 stand.. is that a 9300?

Good looking notebook, disappointing hardware components for the price.

If they're going to start offering 16:9 screens then manufacturers should at least try to match the vertical DPI and bump up the horizontal to compensate.
Screens that were offered as 1280x800 @16:10 should be offered as 1366x768 @16:9
Screens that were offered as 1440x900 @16:10 should be offered as 1600x900 @16:9
Screens that were offered as 1680x1050 @16:10 should be offered as 1920x1080 @16:9
Screens that were offered as 1920x1200 @16:10 should be offered as 2048×1152 @16:9 -
I rather like that computer - was actually considering it instead of my T500, but I'm glad I made the choice I did.
Things I'd like to see on the Y650:
1). higher resolution. 1366x768 is just abysmal on a 16".
2). option for a matte screen. glossy is just not practical for many locations.
3). switchable graphics. if Lenovo offered it, it would distinguish the line from the bulk of consumer laptops out there.
Lenovo hasn't really advertised its consumer line in the past; I hope that changes with this refresh. These new Ideapads really look great, and have quite solid specs (except for resolution), and it would really benefit Lenovo's sales to make people more aware of the line. -

Is it the first Lenovo to change the venerable and ancient keyboard layout from the Thinkpad's? Hm, PU, PD, End keys are vertically down the right instead of up top. Hope the keyboard quality is up to their traditional standard.
The resolution compared to its 16" competition is going to hurt sales. -
this is an ideapad model not a thinkpad -
When is the first review or at least preview going to be available? I'm really curious to see what this baby can do.

The positioning of the dvd unit is strange and I think it's weird they decided to use the still relatively expensive DDR3 but go for a 5400 320gb HDD while the display resolution is really weak. You can have that res on a $400 15.6inch Acer as well.
Right now, money wise, the new XPS16 and even the Sony FW seem to be the better deals. -

Nice pics
Those are better deals for now....i have a hard time believing this thing will have that low res for long.
I love the look of this thing gorgeous inside and those speakers look pretty sick.
I hope there is an update to the U330 coming soon. -
WAY too shiny.
-
Looks appley.
Apples aside if it performs like a ThinkPad then it should be a great machine. -
The huge palm rest and touchpad with the keyboard so far back seems refreshing. Shiny, but the color scheme and style will appeal to people. It looks like a decent basic consumer notebook, but it needs more kick and more resolution, imo. At the very least a 3650 and 1600 x 900 if it's a multimedia machine.
-
Looks kinda like the old Qosmios.
-
It's alriiiiiiiightttt, not awesomeee. I like the back though, seems to have a nice design.

The Ideapad Y Series product page makes mention of the Y650 using up to a 2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor (X9100) so hopefully that model will offer a higher resolution.
But then again I always thought Lenovo kept falling short on their Ideapad series....offering extreme CPUs but never the top end GPUs to go along with them. -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
...huh? A core 2 extreme at 2.53ghz? The X9100 is 2.9-3.0ghz processor a typo?
Also that would make this one of the fastest 16" out there.
im also surprised the wifi is only 5100 and not 5300 i also hope the "highest end version" has a GT 130
A GT 130, X9100, and a 1080 screen would be pretty sweet maybe thats asking for too much though
Props for the link though. -
-
Actually the fastest ever 16" will be the Asus VX5 with it's Quad Core Extreme and GTX 170M (I have my sources).
-
Are you sure about this becoming available with the 130M graphics card? That would be nice... I'm tempted to buy one otherwise.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
LMAO i cant believe i forgot about the VX5 after there was a big discussion about it. These days it too hard to remember all the notebooks.
Also 130m was on the press release im pretty sure. -
-
If this can handle a QX9300 then they might as well put a ATI HD4870m in it and keep the price low and call it a masterpiece.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Lol! The source was under your nose -
Ah, thanks. I also found this on Nvidia's website:
Looks like I'll wait for the grey palmrest, higher rez and a better graphics card before ordering. The laptop looks great though.
Maybe I'll call Lenovo and see if I can find out anything. -
The GTX130M is a good card but not a good match for the QX9300. A Q9100 would work but I wouldn't want to spend the extra cash on an extreme quad-core if a GTX130M is all the GPU power I'm going to get.
My ideal rig is still a single-card Mobility 4850x2 in a 16" laptop. If Lenovo could put that in the Y650 with a QX9300 they'd have themselves a machine. -

And the VX5 is a stunning piece of art. It kills the Y650 in the design department. Seriously.
-
The VX5 is tacky and the idea of paying a premium to have an imaginary association with Lamborghini is childish. And come on now....Leather? Im buying a laptop not a couch.
The only thing the VX5 has on the Y650 in terms of looks is the backlit chiclet keyboard.
