I would get the pc card and express card. (the smart card is something you really don't need for the dorm room, it's ment more for buisnesses. Its like a cellphone simm card for your laptop.

The card reader I would probably get off newegg (just search for sd card reader, or whatever you need). Depending on what you need you can either find a pc card version, express card version, or a usb version. if its just going to sit on your desk in the dorm room $7 gets you a 20 in one usb card reader :)

Tubo memory is like a large hard drive cache. It allows you to store data that you are actively using into flash before it hits the hard drive. Some websites ive looked at say that this greatly improves performance, one website said that it decreases the vista boot time by 25% however another website i looked at said that the turbo memory made almost no difference in performance.

Yup, im getting one for mobile use for when im anywhere other than the dorm room, and then a twin lock for the dorm room. It lets me lock up the lappy and my second monitor.

Sorry I can't answer more of your questions, im also looking for a college laptop (probably going to be a T61) but the best laptop I have now is a T23 :( so i really can't compare anything with the R51

Just wondering... has anyone else gotten the t61 and confirmed it's rather dismal battery life (even with integrated graphics)?

For me, this might sway me to the dell d630, which is unfortunate, given that i really wanted a thinkpad...

    I currently have a 4-yr old T41 laptop. I typically use the T41 8-10 hours/day. In general, the T41 is a ROCK SOLID laptop

I am currently shopping for a new laptop. My 2 finalists are the new T61 or the new MACBook Pro.

Since I’m on the road 80 % of the time, I really need a reliable laptop

As I mentioned, I'm very happy with my current T41 laptop. However, my main concern about upgrading to a new T61 is -- Now that Lenovo owns the line of Thinkpads, will the T61 still be as good as before?

I heard that Lenovo's objective in the future is to lower the price of future Thinkpads to appeal to the mass market. To achieve low costs, Lenovo will tend to use cheaper, lower-quality components.

Is there any truth to this rumor? Will the T61 design and support be as good as before -- now that Lenovo manages the new line of Thinkpads?

Has anyone noticed that when looking at the notebook, closed, from the back, that the screen casing is warped? I have sent back 2 notebooks because of this and CDW tells me that they all have this.

    cool...
how good is the light? (Is it bright enough? Do you find it distracting?)
also, would it work if the screen tilted a lil or has to be perpenticular?
I would be very appreciated if someone can take some pictures or a video...

    thanks in advance,
    soda

    Guys,

Is the off-center screen still present for 15,4'' widescreen? or it's just for the 14,1?

And which graphic card is better, GMA X3100 GM965 or NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M (128MB) (including little gaming)

    Cheers,
    Sergey

Hi and thanks for the review Andrew. I do have a few questions that you may or may not be able to answer, if you don't mind indulging me. I recently read a review for the R61 model and there were quite a few complaints in the thread by the person who reviewed it and others who agreed. I wanted to know if some of the same defects/issues exist in the T61.

    1) Clicking noise in the palm rest - The reviewer complained about this and a lot of other people in the thread corroborated that part of the review. Apparently, once too much pressure is applied to the palm rest, it makes a very audible clicking noise that, to them, suggests poor build quality. Did you notice any of that when you were playing around with the T61?

    2) Clicking noise in the left bezel - Again, there were reportedly clicking noises in the left bezel whenever pressure was applied there. This may not be as big a nuisance as there is never really a reason to even touch that part of a notebook, but its still a concern for many. Did you notice anything there? I guess it's one of the things you probably would not notice unless you're specifically looking for it, but I thought I would ask about it anyway.

    3) Loose cover when closed - Apparently, the lid on the R61 does not close all the way and the left latch does not lock into place when in the closed position. Did you notice any issues when the lid on the T61 was closed?

    4) This one is not from the other thread about the R61; its just a general question I have. What exactly is the difference between the T61 and the T61p?

I fully understand that these are different models, but I still felt obligated to ask. I have been extensively researching Thinkpads for about one month now and I would feel like I wasn't doing a good enough job if I did not pose these questions. Any information that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I even appreciate you taking the time to write the review in the first place.
