A lot of students purchase the ThinkPad since they can get them through their college at a discount and have it placed on their tuition fees so they don't have to pay for it right away.
I can also attest that many, many ThinkPad users complain about the speakers, or the lack their off. Those that don't complain have reached the point of acceptance and use external speakers.
The problem with the Lenovo matte screens is that they are to coarse and why they have poor viewing angles, at least IMHO. When I place the 8710W next to the T61P, I can tell that the 8710W has a smoother outer layer.
I would love to see a ThinkPad with a 17" lcd, Blu-Ray drive, and half decent speakers.

"Do it the most cheapest and efficient way possible; regardless of quality as long as it's passable."
Yes, being Chinese myself, I can certainly attest to that... I'd hate to say this, but it's our motto.
The next time you buy a new mp3 player, a computer, a cell phone, notice how cheaply it's made compared to something let's say manufactured 5 years ago. Scratches out of the box, cheap molding, you bet ya. As prices go lower, build quality's only going to go down a familiar curve. -
Okay, both for bashers and praisers, Remember that this company is not Korean or Japanese or Taiwanese innovated Asian company. We are talking about China. Honestly, for a Chinese innovated tech products, lenovo (although they have no equal quality competitor in China so they have huge support advantage and stuff) It is just, extraordinarily impressive in terms of design, parts they use, and their ideas of quality. They didn't have to create thinkpad cause they just bought IBM, United states innovated veteran powerhouse computer department. Now, this is something new.
